1st off hello everyone. Im new here and trying to gather as much information as I can about upgrading my 4.0. Iv done a few searches here and haven't found much information on this topic.
My question is, what exactly is the difference in my 2005 jeep tj cam shaft and the older ones ( 04 back to??). Is there a retrofit kit that will allow me to pick a come that says it's for an 04? Or is my opda location totally different in the location and style of gear hook up.
My tj has a pretty bad lifter tap and I would like to do a little work while I'm in there.

Re: 05 tj camshaft.
You have two options.
1) Use an earlier aftermarket cam and use the earlier timing set up can cam bolt. The Earlier can bolt has a bolt, washer, pin and spring. You will remove the stock cam's retaining plate and the older setup's pin and spring is suppose to hold the cam in the block.
2) Contact Jones Cams, http://jonescams.com/, and get a custom cam with wide lobes that uses the later retainer plate and timing set. The only draw back is that you have to use the stock style silent link chain.

I don't see that as a drawback. The silent link chains are more durable and less prone to stretch than roller chains.SilverXJ wrote:The only draw back is that you have to use the stock style silent link chain.
Agree. That's probably the best option.SilverXJ wrote:Contact Jones Cams, http://jonescams.com/, and get a custom cam with wide lobes that uses the later retainer plate and timing set.

Cool thanks for the info guys. I have been trying to find that little bit of info for some time. now I need to flip through the site and find some info on having a little head work done while it's off. Also I know 505 performance make a came.shift kit that they claim will work on my 05. Comes with cam, timing set, lifters and pushrods I think.

Yes, I know. But many people think that they need a double roller and the other styles are crap.Cheromaniac wrote:I don't see that as a drawback. The silent link chains are more durable and less prone to stretch than roller chains.

Re: 05 tj camshaft.
Roger that, I need to do a little more research to understand more about the spec on the cam, I quickly read through the sticky on it and seemed like a pretty good amount of information. I want to make sure I can get the most for my. I know some of the better cams need new spring. I need to understand more how this affects everything. I don't want to get away from factory timing and I don't know if that work requires changing timing

Re: 05 tj camshaft.
Most cams will need new springs. Depending on which way you go you could always spec a custom cam to work with the factory springs. However, that is most likely a waste.

Re: 05 tj camshaft.
I need to educate myself a bunch more before I can comfortably pick out a camshaft. I really would like to get into stroking it. But like I said I don't know nearly enough to start buying parts just yet. Thank you for all the info so far! I'm miles ahead of where I was just for this little bit of information provided from you guys!
