They were Bulltear pistons. I didn't realize they were metric until I had to change the rings on the #6 piston and saw that they were both different thickness, I just used the rings that came with my rebuild kit without knowing that the 1996 jeep had two options for rings. I learned that when I was looking around for rings to replace the one that went bad and the guy at the parts store would ask me what size I needed, but that was recently so the damqge was done.

Yep wrong rings are an issue. Not checking for gap then I'm guessing too?

Wrong sized rings will definitely cause a problem. The thinner metric rings in the standard ring groove will not support the ring correctly. Looks like that is what caused the rings to break.

Well, at least I know what went wrong. I remember having to contact the company I ordered the rebuild kit from because they didn't send me the freeze plugs that were supposed to come with the kit, and they said that the person who prepared my order forgot to list them. I remember them not asking if I wanted standard or metric, I just gave them the overbore sizes I needed. Whoever helped me probably didn't know either.
