Re: The BeaterRenix 4.6L Saga
Just occurred to me I've got three gallons of stabil treated gas in a fifteen gallon tank. maybe I should dilute it with fresh gas...
I would much rather be in the garage working on the dana35 I just grenaded with my new Stroker instead of STILL trying to get it running!

Re: The BeaterRenix 4.6L Saga
Excellent point. I haven't measure fuel pressure because I don't have a gauge capable.cruiser54 wrote:We're at #1 TDC, with the dizzy indexed properly, have spark and fuel....

I am at TDC with the #1 indexed ~0.020" clockwise of #1 post. The starter is strong, I have spark, The noid light indicates it's attempting to fire the injectors.
So in an attempt to check fuel pressure without a gauge, I pushed in the schrader valve and it slowly filled the valve stem then gently leaked out. That doesn't look like 39psi. I started disconnecting things. The return line had about the same lackluster pressure on it, which means so did the injectors. The Fuel Pressure regulator is BRAND NEW. I bought it to replace the other one that leaked like a screen door on a submarine. The supply line had WAY more pressure on it that I expected, when I removed it. That makes me suspect the regulator is deadheading the fuel pump. I doubt I can find the receipt so I probably will just have to eat that cost again. The other possibility is 6 months of Phase separated E10 gas has compromised the fuel pump. Is it possible the fuel pump is too weak, and the regulator is working correctly?

Re: The BeaterRenix 4.6L Saga
Stupid question... But I no longer have anything to reference. When I hacked up my fuel lines to convert the renix fuel rail to HO, (91-96) I may have gotten the polarity backwards. So here's the question:
Does the fuel travel to the rail and injectors then to the regulator and return?
Or
Does it go to the regulator first, then the rail and return?

Re: The BeaterRenix 4.6L Saga
IIRC, the fuel pressure enters the rail and at the end of the rail, the regulator does what it does to maintain the correct pressure before fuel returns to the tank.

Re: The BeaterRenix 4.6L Saga
That's what I thought.. I just googled it. Most systems start at the rail and then go to the regulator... So I just switched it.
SUCESS!!!!
It turned over! The belt was screaming.. So I'll have to address that before I cam do the can break it. But freaking YES! It's always the simple stuff.
Thanks for your help Cruiser!

While looking in the manual for your info, I found some good diagrams and snagged them. Win-win!!

Re: The BeaterRenix 4.6L Saga
Had to grind the wired protuberance off the timing cover to tighten the belt sufficiently. Probably not a problem for most, but since I did swap for the 99+ intake it needed it.
Just did the cam breakin... That's something you should do OUTSIDE. Truly a bad idea with just the garage door open. Lots of smoke! Also I redid the entire exhaust system, so the cat got quite hot. Hot enough to melt stuff on the floor above it. I was not expecting that. But there was so much smoke I ignored it, only after I shut it down did I notice. That could have been a real problem!
I'm loving the deep exhaust I put on, and the throttle response is great! I'm letting it cool to just below scalding before I change the oil.
This is one very happy man!

So you had the fuel- supply line and return line reversed on the fuel rail?
Your FPR is mounted on the fuel rail, correct?

Re: The BeaterRenix 4.6L Saga
Yeah when you say it like that it seems pretty stupid to keep it from running for three weeks. I got confused swapping the fuel rail from Renix to HO. The HO rail has a stock location pressure regulator for the 91-96 models. The supply and return are in different locations, so I had to fab custom fuel lines. I had just assumed i knew which direction they went. We all know what that gets us.
I did an oil change and I had straight water in the radiator to flush it. So I drained all the water from there, and filled it with coolant. I've got to top off fluids before I drive it. That and address the melted carpet above the relocated Cat.
It rained last night while I was doing the cam break in, I later realized it was 25 degrees outside, so that's pretty terrible. Anyone else get freezing rain?

Re: The BeaterRenix 4.6L Saga
So I was hoping that the just belt wasn't tight enough and the alternator would start working... no joy. So sitting out side (with no hood) for six months, did not help the alternator. That's just the excuse I was looking for to buy a 170 amp from quickstart alternators. So that's in the mail. I'll post back on how I like it (or if that was even the problem). Still haven't had the time to pull it out of the garage. I'm hoping this week. Work, school, wife, kids, rinse, repeat.

Re: The BeaterRenix 4.6L Saga
It never ends! I cant just enjoy things. So the new alternator is on and it is working wonderful. Well it's putting out 14.5VDC so I guess that's about as wonderful as they get. I discovered that I only partially cleared my driveway of ice and had previously removed the vacuum lines from the 4x4 system. The thinking there was to remove variables, heaven knows I have enough. So I got stuck in the ice with my open diff under my garage door. That's really awesome in my super BA jeep. Shoveled and chipped for almost an hour, finally decided to just hook up the 4x4 system vacuum leak or not. Then finally took it for a test drive. Great throttle response, in fact almost too much for the weather. I immediately noticed when I slowed, break or otherwise dip the nose, I got this odd sound. Best way to describe it is a chainsaw cutting down a chain-link fence. I nervously turn around and get the heep back in the garage. I hadn't a clue what it was I afraid it was the transmission, after I had added a cooler. Here's what I found.
It looks like all the effort I went through to removed the factory "Dent" in the down pipe was rewarded by my front drive shaft self-clearancing on my new down pipe. I don't have a plan of attack for this yet. AND I've still got to do ball joints. Lame!

Re: The BeaterRenix 4.6L Saga
Yeah. When you remove the "crush", you must also sweep the headpipe back sooner than the stock one was.
