Introduction and need stroker advice.
Been lurking around on and off for a while thought I would introduce my self, I'm Cranky D! I have a 1983 CJ-7 that My son is restoring for me. You can get a look at it here http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f8/start ... s-1433372/
We have done everything ourselves so far except for mounting and balancing the tires and a little machine shop work! The jeep has a 258 that has developed a good bit of noise deep down in the block somewhere and it's time for that stroker build! I currently have the following;
1997 NVH block (WJ?) casting #53020569
1983 4cw longnose 258 crank
4.0 rods
4.2 rods
4.0 cam from above block
0630 4.0 head
intake from above block
aftermarket stock replacement header
The block and crank are at the machine shop now getting cleaned up and I need to finalize my plans. That's where I need help. My goals are: Instant, low RPM bottom end, axle breaking, head snapping torque! I could care less if it only makes 180 HP as long as I can get on it at 1000 RPM and go. I would also like to end up about 8.5-8.7 Compression ratio. I will be switching over to MPFI, probably OBD1. Right now I am thinking of more or less following a long rod rockcrawler or modified poor mans type build but I really didn't want to pop for the KB944 pistons. What other options do I have for pistons in a cast or hyper, off the shelf piston that I don't have to send off to be dished? Any help y'all can give me is much appreciated.

What is the elevation where this rig will be built and driven?

Re: Introduction and need stroker advice.
Being that I live on the east coast, This rig will be operated at 6,683' (mount Mitchell) elevation or less. I can always dream about the Rockies and Sierras but that will not be the primary operating enviroment. Typically I encounter sea level to 3,000 feet. Home elevation is 300.00 feet above Mean Sea Level, measured at the carburetor!

None. You'd either have to copy my low CR "rockcrawler" recipe or use the 4.0L rods with custom pistons.CrankyD wrote:I would also like to end up about 8.5-8.7 Compression ratio.

Bummer, Thanks Dino. Who has the best price on pistons? I had read about a few people that got them around $360.

Re: Introduction and need stroker advice.
Well I pulled the trigger on the IC944 pistons. The price has gone up on Bulltear's website, but Summit matched it for me (the $475 is no rings BTW). I am also going with the new Edelbrock aluminum head, So now the ingredient list looks like this:
1997 NVH block (WJ?) casting #53020569
1983 4cw longnose 258 crank
4.0 rods
IC944-030 pistons w/rings
4.0 cam from above block OR ??? Mystery Cam depending on Edelbrock's recomendations
Edelbrock 50169 Aluminum Head.
9.0-9.5 CR
.030 over bore.
intake from above block
aftermarket stock replacement header.
What I need now is suggestions on CR, quench and deck height to get outstanding resistance to detonation. My design parameters have remained unchanged, I want this motor to perform at least as well as my current 258 in low RPM use. Any high RPM gains are considered as a bonus. Please feel to comment with any suggestions or if you see any potential problems with my plan!

Re: Introduction and need stroker advice.
1. CR can be in the high 9's with an aluminium head.CrankyD wrote:What I need now is suggestions on CR, quench and deck height to get outstanding resistance to detonation.
2, Keep quench not higher than 0.050".
3. Keep deck clearance not higher than 0.010".
4. Polish the combustion chambers and piston dishes to a smooth finish.

How hard was it to get summit to price match the IC944's to the Bulltears?

Re: Introduction and need stroker advice.
I'm Sorry, Looks like I mis-spoke on the price match. I got them to price match RPM Machine IC944 to IC944, NOT to the bulltear pistons. It took the salesman a few minutes to verify the price but then he matched it and saved me a good chunk of change.
Sorry for the confusion.

Just remember that the RPM machine price is without rings. Good luck!

Re: Introduction and need stroker advice.
So, My head is due in today and the motor machine work is finishing up next week or so. I have told the shop to aim for 9.5 to 10.0:1 compression, deck less than .010" with a fel pro head gasket .043" IIRC. IC944 pistons .030" over. Any input on what cam and intake to go with the Edelbrock 50169 head? Right now I have the log style off a 1997 Grand with and I'm Planning for OBD1 distributor ignition. Should I go with a bigger cam and the rams horn intake or stay with a conservative cam like the Comp 252H on the log style manifold?

Re: Introduction and need stroker advice.
Since you want low rev torque, I suggest you go with the '00+ curved runner intake and either:
1. Use your stock '97 cam with stock valve springs or,
2. Go for a 68-232-4 cam with aftermarket springs.
