I need help. idle issues
so i have a 4.6 stroker
mopar valvtrain.
bored it 30 thou over stroked to 4.6
skat crank
comp cams K68-231-4 cam
mopar valvetrain
new stock pushrods
pistons and rods new
yella terra 1.6 roller rockers
flowcooler water pump
upgraded oil pump
mustang injectors
new spark plugs reused distributor
ive had her running for roughly a year and a half now.
at startup from cold will not idle. stalls and dies unless i hold some gas.
once started up feels like shes missing/out of timing. even tho timing is correct.
only does miss at low rpm at high she sounds great.
valves are noisy. which im not sure why due to the fact that i have roller rockers but i have heard the cam is the cause and the fact that the springs i put in are apparently stronger.
ive replaced the o2 sensor.
and the sensors on the throttlebody.
all injectors fire.
it does smell like it runs a tad rich.
Help im just not sure what i can try here.

Any codes? A hard code would trip the MIL light but you might want to hook up a scanner and check for soft codes too.

Re: I need help. idle issues
What year/model vehicle? What is the part number on the injectors? Fuel trims?
The Comp Cam will be noisy, especially with the roller rockers.

Re: I need help. idle issues
the only code ive seen was the o2 sensor. when i put engine in wires touched exhaust and melted them. but this happened way after i had her running. has since been rewired and put a new o2 sensor in.
its a 1992 laredo xj
havnt hooked up a scanner but have done a flash code. no current codes.
injector # is 0 288 155 715

Re: I need help. idle issues
so what ive found out.
where I got info if its easier to look at http://users.erols.com/srweiss/tableifc.htm
Part Number lbs/hr cc /min grams /min PSI BARS lbs/hr cc /min 80% 95% Feed Impedance Application n-H
0-280-155-715 22.45 235.9 169.7 43.5 3.0 22.45 235.9 34.5 41 Top High Ford v6-3.0l, v8-4.6l <---- this is what I have
In doing some research I am finding people running the 0-280-150-947 its information is
0-280-150-947 24.27 255.1 183.5 39.15 2.7 25.58 268.9 37.3 44.3 EV1 High Ford v8-5.0l, Truck v8-7.5l
I believed my injectors were 24lbs but looks like they are 22.45
this is a little out of my depth so any help understanding this would be awesome. and yes I understand air to fuel ratio.
but me being super logic minded thinking. if I need bigger injectors still why would she be running rich ?
right ?

Pull each plug wire and see if drop in rpm/smoothness.
Pull each injector plug and see if drop in rpm/smoothness.
Might help identify which cylinder is the problem.

used a noid light to check all injectors firing. all cylinders fire also.

Re: I need help. idle issues
Are you sure it is running rich? I would expect lean at startup with those injectors. I have 24.6 lb injectors and mine runs pretty lean and runs crappy for the first 15 seconds or so until it goes closed loop. With your lighter injectors I would expect yours to be worse.blu3fan wrote:so what ive found out.

Re: I need help. idle issues
is there a way to test ? it smells like its running rich it doesnt smoke or anything but there is carbon buildup around the exhaust and its way more than before she was a stroker.
pretty sure i need a wideband o2 sensor to test it and i replaced with BOSCH Part # 15704 which i do not believe is a wideband.

Re: I need help. idle issues
Yes, wideband O2 would be the way to test. I tried to go cheap at first and got a gauge for the narrowband sensor the computer uses but that was a waste of money. I have an Innovate wideband now. Not sure I would buy it again, it has some nice features and is mostly built well but the connectors on the back are wimpy, lots of wires, and sometimes it does not come up correctly and you have to turn on and back on to reinitialize it.blu3fan wrote:is there a way to test ? it smells like its running rich it doesnt smoke or anything but there is carbon buildup around the exhaust and its way more than before she was a stroker.

My exhaust has almost no carbon in it. I wonder why yours would be running so rich. Have you checked your coolant temp sensor? If the computer thinks the engine is very cold it will make it run rich.

Re: I need help. idle issues
That's not the same as pulling the connector while running and checking the smoothness. You want to check if the injectors are actually firing fuel into the intake/cylinder. The noid light only checks if the ecu is firing at the connector, nothing about the injector itself. Pulling each plug wire individually, checks the wire, plug and if the cylinder is firing.blu3fan wrote:used a noid light to check all injectors firing. all cylinders fire also.

Re: I need help. idle issues
Could have a wiring problem, open is cold. You might want to try measuring signals at the PCM connector. I used a piece of .030" MIG wire on a clip lead to stick in the connector with the cover off. Your MAP could also be reading high VAC that would make it run rich.blu3fan wrote:coolant sensor was replaced. already had that thought.
Don't pull the plug wires off running, the spark WILL find a path to ground.

Re: I need help. idle issues
I have already pulled each spark plug one by one. the idle only gets worse. everything is firing correctly. its down to air to fuel mix or a sensor at this point im thinking.
like I said its missing. its not that it isn't firing.
feel like timing but I have the timing set correctly

Re: I need help. idle issues
Since you have an aftermarket cam, you may need to cut one of the ears from the distributor hold-down fork to index the distributor correctly.
