90 Renix XJ / 94 Stroker / 99+ Intake Manifold

Post by JeepFan »

I've done a bunch of searching and reading on this and I think I am more confused than ever...
I have a 1990 Renix-equipped Jeep Cherokee with a 1994 HO stroker block and head, but since the 1990 intake manifold does not match up to my 1994 HO head worth a crap (there has got to be a ton of turbulence), I would like to convert to the newer 1999+ intake manifold.

My current configuration is:
- 1994 engine block and head
- 1990 stock exhaust manifold
- 1990 stock intake manifold
- 1990 throttle body, fuel rail, etc.
- Ford 29 lb. blue fuel injectors
- Stock 1990 Power Steering pump, A/C compressor, Alternator, idler, belt, brackets, etc.

Some parts that I already have on my shelf are:
- 1994 intake manifold (fuel rail, etc.)
- 1994 throttle body
- 2001 intake manifold (fuel rail, etc.)
- 2001 throttle body

I would like to retain my stock 1990 exhaust manifold (if possible) and will probably use Hesco's TPS adapter bracket. Other than that, I have no clue on what I REALLY need to buy or what I REALLY need to do for my particular configuration...

Some info that I've read (not all) said that I will need to:
- replace my power steering bracket, pump, idler, etc.
- replace my fuel lines
- replace my throttle cable & bracket
- replace cruise control cables & brackets
- replace and reroute my belt

Has anyone completed a conversion like this? Any suggestions or advice? Thanks!

Mines running now with a ,1990 renix computer and 95 head intake and throttle body, if you can weld, you can make your own tos adapter

Check my build thread its exactly what I did.

I would recommend though changing the header. You can get a 91 front pipe which will allow you to bolt it all up without taking it to an exhaust shop for fitment.

i am running 89 block
91 7120 head
84 intake with adapter to run 2150 carb
91 HO header-OEM

now i want to goto EFI...(I know... better late than never-dont tell me)

i have 89 ECU, wiring(mostly) and intake/TB...

I also have most of the 91 intake/TB(not sure whats there or missing...

will any of it have conflicts?

I would have preferred to buy the 97 on CL today for $650 running with 260k miles and just used all that stuff BUT.... driveway space, 97 intake compatibility? issues???? not sure enough...

ideas?
Mark

BTW-im excellent at re-creating/recycling non-stock wire harness to work in a non-factory way.

I will HAVE to be using the hesco damper kit as my flexplate does not have-nor will ever have trigger holes... 727 trans....

I am also going to have to get SUPREMELY creative as my 727 depends on a very specific lever system to apply the kickdown action.

thats going to be fun!

also going to have to re-fab and create a location for my YORK OBO which is currently using teh 1981 OEM serpentine system with an added 97 chevy tensioner(instead of leverage and bolts) as well as retaining OEM AC in correct pass side location.

JOYS!!

- Stock 1990 Power Steering pump, A/C compressor, Alternator, idler, belt, brackets, etc.

Some parts that I already have on my shelf are:
- 1994 intake manifold (fuel rail, etc.)
- 1994 throttle body Use it and make your own TPS adapter
- 2001 intake manifold (fuel rail, etc.) Use it together with '94 injector rail, regulator, and fuel lines.
- 2001 throttle body

I would like to retain my stock 1990 exhaust manifold (if possible) It's possible and will probably use Hesco's TPS adapter bracket Ridiculously expensive. Make your own or modify the existing Renix TPS.. Other than that, I have no clue on what I REALLY need to buy or what I REALLY need to do for my particular configuration...

Some info that I've read (not all) said that I will need to:
- replace my power steering bracket, pump, idler, etc. You'll need the '97+ TJ/XJ PS pump & mounting bracket with the '01 manifold but you can keep your existing stock items if you use your '94 manifold.
- replace my fuel lines Use your '94 items.
- replace my throttle cable & bracket No need. Your existing items will work.
- replace cruise control cables & brackets Same again. Your existing items will work.
- replace and reroute my belt If you use the '01 manifold with '97+ PS pump/bracket, yes. You'd need to use the stock '01 belt.
I converted to an '01 XJ intake manifold/PS pump/bracket from my stock '92 items 5 years ago so I've been there.

Soooo... it sounds like the easiest (and cheapest) thing for me to do, would be to use my '94 intake manifold, fuel rail, throttle body, etc., - the only thing I would need to do then, would be to adapt my '90 Renix TPS to the '94 throttle body, right?

Are the fuel lines different between '90 and '94? I don't have the '94 fuel lines - just the fuel rail.

And my stock '90 exhaust manifold should still work with the '94 intake? No clearance issues between the exhaust and intake manifolds? It looks like they did not change the exhaust ports between the two years.

I would like to use the 2001 intake manifold for the better flow characteristics, but for all of the extra work and expense, I don't know if it would be worth it. My main concern is the turbulence and restriction that my '90 intake manifold creates bolted to my '94 head...

Is there a site or worksheet showing the various intakes through the years showing port locations?
and the same thing in regard to head intake port size/locations?

a compatibility chart-like... will my 89 intake bolt to a 91 head with no issues?

will a 97 intake bolt to a 91 head with no turbulence?

what about a 1999-up intake bolting to a 7120 head?

Right.

I think the supply line is the same but the return line is different. Not 100% sure on that though.

And my stock '90 exhaust manifold should still work with the '94 intake?

Yes.

No clearance issues between the exhaust and intake manifolds?

If anything, there should be more clearance with the high port HO intake.

Hi Muad'Dib,

How do I find your build thread?
