How do you have the spark plugs wires up now? Also, what style are the coil side spark wire connectors look like? There are two different styles

I tried 3-4,2-5,1-6 4-3,5-2,6-1 4-3,6-1,2-5 and a bunch others. pretty much just randomly moved them around after those didn't work

No, the connectors at the end of the plug wires. Perhaps it has the wrong ends for the coil.

Other than that you will either have to get the Viper coil or dive in and see what the wiring pin out is on the coil you have and figure out which post goes to which pin. Just because a coil looks the same does not mean it is the same.

I'm almost about to install Airtex Dodge Viper coil to my 1999 WJ 4.0 but I have a couple of questions:
1) which high voltage wires should I use to connect to sparks? Here on russian cars we have other type coil connectors, so I can't find them in the shop. Only to order by part number.
2) what about harness connection? I just disconnect old coil and plug directly new one?

I don't know. I used a custom set. Perhaps a set of stock wires may work. What is different about the Russian coil connectors?

Pretty much. Depending on where you place the coil you may have to solder in a little bit of extension wire.

How did you check coil wires using multimeter?
Do you have Viper and WJ coil wiring diagrams?
My WJ also doesn't start after this mod

Could you post a pic of how you have the ignition wires ran from the coil to the plugs? Pics of the vehicle side wiring?

I've triple checked the FSMs and the pinout and wiring for both the 2000 XJ and WJ is the same. As well as the coil rails bearing the same part numbers. What plug wires did you use?

On the stock connector:
Pin#; plugs
1; 1&6
2; positive
3; 2&5
4; 3&4

On the viper coil:
Pin#; terminals on coil (numbers on coil pack); jeep plugs
1; 1&6; 1&6
2; positive
3; 4&7; 2&5
4; 2&3; 3&4

If you are looking at the top of the viper coil pack, this is what it would be:


Being that the Viper pack is waste fire as well you can alternate the wires on each side... e.g. swap 3&4, 1&6, 2&5. Just keep them on the same coil.

Thanks Viper Coil I can check if there is spark now. There is good spark on each plug.
I guess they should fire together by pair in way 1+6, 5+2, 3+4 as order is 153624? So I can easily check if my connection is right.

That pic looks fine. I would double check that you have the stock wiring extended correctly (no swapped wires) if you extended the harness. I would also make sure that the ignition wires aren't coming close to any other stock wires and causing interference. Particularly the cam sensor wiring on that side. What part number coil are you using?

I've just put stock coil rail and engine starts fine.
I'm using Airtex 5C1432.

That is the same coil that joshbaker used and he had problems with it. Its also not the coil I used.

I see. You've never mentioned what manufactorer and part-number coil you use. So what coil are you using and what problem might be with Airtex coil?
When I checked the spark I guess I've seen like 1-6 and 3-4 give spark one after another and 2-5 gives two or four times more often. Like 1-6 then 2-5 then 3-4 then 2-5 again then 1-6 and so on.

Found that Airtex 5C1432 is from Caravan 2001-2010 Pacifica 2005-2008 Wrangler 2007-2011 3.3/3.8L. Could we check wirings for these cars?

I'm pretty sure I said I used a Dodge Viper coil in the first post. No, I'm not checking wiring for any other vehicles.

I own a couple of 2000 Jeep Cherokees and always hated the Coil Rail and considered doing this swap, just recently I purchased a 2000 XJ with a blown motor with all the engine parts in the back of the Jeep and once I was done installing the 98 XJ Motor I found the Coil Pack I had was bad.

I was going to order a Viper Coil pack but my buddy had a factory Chrysler (non viper) coil pack in his tool box new and gave it to me, LONG STORY SHORT is it worked - it had the following number stamped in the back 56032520AB, I plugged it directly in to the stock wiring loom after shaving off the coil the two bumps on the plug area (so it would plug in) I wired it the same as above - looking at the top with the plug to the right

4 & 3 top (I know flip/flop as above but I don't think it matters)
2 & 5 middle
1 & 6 bottom

The part number cross references to;

I used the stock wires from a 01 Dodge Caravan that I got from the junkyard (spend $7 on) just to see if everything would work before investing major money on new wires and coil, I still need to mount the coil which will require extending the wiring harness plug - and make sure the Caravan wires will work with the mounting point I decide on (I will post a picture when I am done), but thought I would pass on that despite other folks problems the Airteck 5C1432 will run the motor.... although I have not driven it yet down the road.
