anything is possible i suppose. it didnt spin bad when i built it. the crank spun nice by hand.
anyone know how much can be ground before there are issues?
i'm guessing there is no bearing that is oversized for the thrust surfaces.

is the block decked? what pistons do you have? you can get a amc 232 crank with bearings for under 200

block is decked .035", i have dished silvolite pistons. whatever stock replacement is but dished another .075"
Not so sure i want to go the 232 route but that is a good deal

you can't because the blocks already decked...to bad you dont live closer to mi i have a 258 crank with rods for $250

as far as setting the bearing, i didnt think there were any special tricks to it so i just put them in place in the obvious orientations. I am a noob though, if that hasnt been apparent lol

Bummer deal! Did you measure crank endplay and runout when assembling the motor? The thrust surface on the crankshaft is easy to overlook. I've seen them pretty rough from grinding and polishing belts and/or neglect thru the years... The thrust surfaces work just like a bearing, they need a certain clearance for an oil film to develop which keeps the crank stationary. If the clearance is too much or the surfaces not ideal, the film will not form and contact will occur. You stated the wear is on the flywheel side, does your rig have the clutch pedal starter lockout? And was the clutch properly adjusted so the throwout bearing isn't riding? If you have pedal lockout, I'd disconnect it so you can start it without pressing the pedal in. It puts all of that force from the pressure plate on the crankshaft thrust surface during the initial phase of cranking with no oil pressure... If that surface is less than ideal or the clearance is too much, thrust wear will eventually occur.

well i just picked up 5 cranks from the junkyard, going to try again. 4 are for a friend, he's an engine builder.

one of those 5 cranks was wrapped up, and when i unwrapped it, i found that it was a remanufactured crank in perfect condition, never ran. Obviously i threw that in. Endplay was .003". Engine is back together, i just need to put the trans in after lunch then it's ready to try. Wish me luck! Appreciate all the help guys!

got it running. vibes are definitely better. it's a little harsh around 4500-5k, but i suspect some valve float up there due to the springs and whatnot. driveable though. it sounds much better.

If youre saying the vibrations are a little harsh at that rpm thats a good sign something is trying to come apart!Vibrations of any sort wether driveline or motor are signs something is really wrong.What happens say at 55-60mph when you step on the clutch?Is the vibration still there or is it gone?Just trying to figure out if its actually the motor or a driveline issue.

Well it definitely has driveline vibes. No question there lol. But I don't know if these are really vibes or its just valve float. It just is loud. It also falls flat at about 4k or so. I don't know if its just the nature of the 232 cam or not. It pulls real nice up to there. In 5th, it will pull from 50 to about 105mph relatively well considering I'm on 1 tons and large 37's.

if it was me i wouldn't be givin it that much hell yet, i would let her break in a bit and spend just a second or so at high rpm until you get at least a 1000 or so miles on it and two oil changes to makes sure shes clean of break in metal
