noisy upper end
got the stroker in and been driving it for awhile. I was wondering if anyone here has had a slightly noisy upper end on theirs? im running roller rockers and a alum valve cover so it might just be the chatter from those going through the cover. im also running straight 30w in it right now. other than the annoying little tick it runs awesome

Re: noisy upper end
Roller rockers can be noisey. Also, what cam are you running?
When is the noise most prominent? around 2000 rpm?

Re: noisy upper end
A bit of valvetrain noise is normal if you've upgraded the valve springs and it's usually most prominent around 1500rpm.

its a 231 comp, ya its around 1500-2500 but its really always there. ill see when I change the oil after break it if its still annoying ill pull the valve cover and check the push rod length its the only thing I think it could be if something is wrong but me and my machinist measured. has crap tons of power though

Re: noisy upper end
The comp 231 will be a bit noisy, especially with roller rockers.

Re: noisy upper end
Which valve springs did you use? I hope not the Compcams versions 'cause they're too stiff.vashxj wrote:its a 231 comp, ya its around 1500-2500 but its really always there.

Re: noisy upper end
I ran roller rockers with Mopar Performance valve springs (something like 120# seat pressure, and I can't remember the open pressure...maybe 250-260 open?) Somewhat fast acting cam lobes with .501 lift with 214 duration @.050., and my top end was quiet. I also ran an aluminum valve cover. I'm not trying to start any kind of argument, just letting you know my setup and results.

Re: noisy upper end
I ran the Comp 232 and it always had the sewing machine sound above 1800 rpm or so. I went thru 3 different sets of springs trying to quiet it down...Got it a bit quieter with less spring pressure but still made noise. Running Lunati now it's silent..

Re: noisy upper end
ya I have the mopar springs in it, and yes it that same sewing machine noise, I really don't think anything is wrong. seems like a lot of you have had a similar noise

Re: noisy upper end
No problem there. That is just the way the comp sounds along with the roller rockers.

Re: noisy upper end
What kind of roller rockers did you use? i.e. brand and ratio....maybe some brands are noisier than others. I've heard that stainless steel roller rockers are quieter than aluminum(?).dwg86 wrote:I ran roller rockers with Mopar Performance valve springs
Also, most stroker builds I see don't use guide plates. I thought guide plates, with hardened push rods, were highly recommended for stud-mounted roller rockers because they add stability to the valve train. So, wonder if guide plates would help make a difference in the sound?

Re: noisy upper end
I didn't see any modifications to his head to indicate stud mount rockers, which mostly need guide plates. In those the guide plates locate the rocker arms over the valves. However, all the bolt on (no head machining needed) 4.0L rockers are linked as a pair. Either with a pin in the case of Harland Sharps or with a solid shaft between the pair in the case of Yella Terra. You do not want to use guide plates with these.
Another thing to look for is the MP springs hitting the side of the valve cover.

Re: noisy upper end
Ditto on the springs rubbing.. Had several hitting the cover. Any valvesprings bigger than about 1.40" od will be getting awful close to the aluminum valve cover. Easy to spot though, just pull it a look for rub marks.

Re: noisy upper end
sorry I don't normally het on til the end of the day, but just to clarify they are the pedestal mount Harland sharp rockers 1.6, it seems to be a little quieter when its cold so I guess we will find out when I switch from the break in oil. if the tone changes at all. what weight oil are most of you guys running?
