Really how much difference?

Post by tigmeister »

Well, my question is: How much difference in horsepower and torque between a Comp cams 68-231-4 and an OEM cam?

Engine specs:
KB IC944-040 pistons
'88 258 crank
4.0 rods
stock rockers
Head '93 HO casting 7120 with moderate port and polish (combustion chambers semi-polished, intakes gasket matched and runners blended, exhausts runners smoothed out.)
Head has been milled .015" to flatten out.
Block '89 renix zero clearanced, bored .040" over to clean up.
Ford 24# injectors

This will be going in my '93 XJ with OBD1.

I use it as my DD, (don't have to, but like to) with a lot of freeway miles cruising at 75-80 mph.
I also wheel it on the weekends, live at 4500 feet above sea level and work and play at that elevation or higher.

So really, how much difference is there between the 2 cams?

I've run the numbers through the compression calculator and searched the forum for days, (enough that the wife is irritated with the time spent) and can't come up with real life numbers or even an approximation.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I ran a dyno simulation on my own engine combo and the projected gain with the 68-231-4 cam was 14hp/9lbft.

Wow, For that little gain the Comp doesn't seem to be worth buying!

Now you know why the "poor man's" stroker is becoming more popular.

68-231-4 or 68-232-4 ?

I was told by COMP after I bought the damn cam that the 232 is better for my fuel injection. He went into detail. What is the difference between two?

Thanks

The 232 produces marginally more torque at lower rpm and has a smoother idle, while the 231 produces more torque from 4000rpm upwards with a flatter torque curve.

Thank you for the great reply.

Sounds like the 232 has more (while small amount) on the bottom end. Great for trails? Did I mis-read?

Another thing to factor in is the OEM cam will last longer than most aftermarket cams. Look at what cams wipe out bearings and lose lobes.

And 10 horse is hard to feel on a built Jeep.
