Tuning your Stroker, Are you Happy?
For everyone who has done a stroker engine, How is your tune? How hard was it to tune? Who helped you tune it? The stroker company? Were you left on your own to tune?
Does your stroker engine run well? Does it get decent mileage? Does it pass smog inspections?
Knowing what you know now, would you do a stroker again?

How hard was it to tune? Easy. My engine specs don't deviate far from stock. Just set MAP adjuster according to A/F ratios on my gauge.
Does your stroker engine run well? Runs brilliantly.
Does it get decent mileage? Yes. About the same as when my original healthy 4.0 engine was bone stock.
Does it pass smog inspections? Easily. My stroker's HC and CO emissions are much lower than those of my original healthy 4.0.
Knowing what you know now, would you do a stroker again? Yes. In fact I just recently helped a friend build a modified 4.6L "poor man's" stroker for his '01 XJ and he's a very happy man.

Modified PCM for idle speed, transmission torque control and a host of other options. FIC for fine tuning and playing with, wideband, Neon 25 lb injectors.CobraMarty wrote:For everyone who has done a stroker engine, How is your tune?
Its not difficult. Installing the components took a bunch of wiring. After that its logging OBD II for fuel trim, and the FIC for wideband and everything else. I then go back and look at the logs to find where I need to adjust both for daily driving (closed loop) and WOT (Open loop). I like to play with things and do things not done before, so it is fun for me.How hard was it to tune?
Stroker companies don't typically help you tune it. Each vehicle can be different. In the case of Hesco, which is the company that knows the stroker the best, they can setup an Omnichip with a close enough tune for your combination.Who helped you tune it? The stroker company? Were you left on your own to tune?
After I worked out the bugs, yesDoes your stroker engine run well?
Haven't checked mileage and I don't have a smog check, won't live in a state that does.Does it get decent mileage? Does it pass smog inspections?

I don't know. I had some problems which made it pain in the ass, but most strokers aren't like that. I learned a lot, and I mean a lot in building it, spec'ing it, sourcing the parts and working out the bugs. If I had to do it again I don't know if I would do another stroker and use what I know or put a more modern V8 in.Knowing what you know now, would you do a stroker again?

Re: Tuning your Stroker, Are you Happy?
Yeah I was very happy with my old 235hp modified 4.0 and it hauled ass, but I got jealous of others building strokers and decided I wasn't going to be left out of the party. Even though the HP difference between the 4.6 stroker and modified 4.0 looks small, the TQ difference is noticeable especially from idle-4000rpm.CobraMarty wrote:Interesting that you went from

Sounds like your native language is Arabic. Where are you from, and can you give a better description of the problem?ma3aad wrote:I have a problem with a speed RPM. Can RPM up ? ... jeep 1996

Re: Tuning your Stroker, Are you Happy?
I started this thread before Ryan came aboard. With his help, there should be a perfect running stroker in every garage.
I was unhappy with the tuning before- map adjusters, unknown which size injectors to really use, poor mileage, etc.
Finally the stock ECU can be tuned to run perfectly with larger injectors and stroked.
Would I have considered building a stroker before-NO. Now with tuning of the ECU available and someone very willing to help-YES.
Just use the stock cam or a Mopar cam or for '99+ use a custom cam from a knowledgeable specialized grinder like Jones, and MP springs.

That is odd. I dont find 56041298 listed in my 550 page DCX PCM list. I found 297 and 299, those are both '96 XJs. Hmmm....Any other markings on the PCM?ma3aad wrote:I take a picture of him
