the starting motor of the 4.2 was always giving us engagment trouble with the flywheel and eventually eating the bendix and the teeths of the flywheel.
the 4.0 have a superior starting motor with gears, its takes alot less amps from the battery and works flawlessly compares to the old 10lbs direct drive starting motor.
you cant only change the starter, you'll have to swap for 4.0 flywheel to use the 4.0 starter.

If you're using the EFI system with a bellhousing-mounted CPS, you'll need the 4.0L flywheel 'cause that has a notch that allows the CPS to produce a signal when the no.1 cylinder is at TDC. If you want to use the 4.2L flywheel and still have EFI, you'll need Hesco's special harmonic damper with crank sensor. This is the one that works on the HO 4.0 engine from '91+:

For now I am using a Holley 390.. 4.2l intake
