Duplicolor Engine Enamel clear?
Any one used this product? Thinking of painting my freshly sandblasted intake manifold with it. I'm a bit concerned about how it will stick to bare aluminum and if it will yellow or not.

Re: Duplicolor Engine Enamel clear?
Ive used it alot. It works great. I even used it over a dirty valve cover, and its held pretty well.
If you have a sandblasted peice that you want to paint, it should work flawlessly.
This is how i would do it.
Paint it with 2-4 coats of primer (depending on how anal you are about it looking great)
Wait 20 minutes between each coats. Then let it all dry for 24 hours.
Now you may want to rough it up a little bit with some 220 grit.
Then pick the color you want to use for the main paint and do the same thing.
Paint it with 2-4 coats of your color choice.
Wait the 20 minutes between coats, and then let dry for another 24 hours.
I havent actually followed this procedure yet as most of the stuff ive painted with it i have wanted to get back on the Jeep again really quick... and it has worked well just doing that.
EDIT!!
Shit i guess i should have read a little better you said the clear..
Ive never used it... but its a good idea!

Re: Duplicolor Engine Enamel clear?
Talked to Duplicolor and they said the clear would be fine with out primer.
Your method is different from what duplicolor suggests. They recommend doing all the coats with in 1 hour of each or wait 5-7 days to recoat for their enamel due to, I think, wrinkling.

FWIW, do not respray after the window has passed!
Been there done that, it crinkles up the paint and you have to strip and start over!!!!
Really sucks!
I've not used clear but the colors seem to hold up great!
Let us know if it fails!
I may use it on ly intake, when I get to it!

Re: Duplicolor Engine Enamel clear?
The intake and the head have been sprayed. The intake received 4 coats of clear. The head received two primer coats, two color coats and two clear coats. No wrinkling. However, a small bit of the head's paint peeled up from the primer coat when I was removing the masking tape. I'm a little concerned about that. I'll let you know how the clear alone works. I have used the color over primer in the pas and have had good results.

Re: Duplicolor Engine Enamel clear?
Head was sanded a bit in the bad areas, then cleaned with paint thinner several times. Coats were applied within 10 or so minutes of each other. Manifold was sandblasted and cleaned with paint thinner as well. Same painting method. Oh.. and they were all sprayed on.

Re: Duplicolor Engine Enamel clear?
I used the clear on my 401 air gap manifold. The clear yellowed(if that is a word). I won't use it again. I am going to take it off have it glass beaded and powder coated.

Re: Duplicolor Engine Enamel clear?
After a few cycles in the oven at 200* the intake manifold did start to yellow. Its at the powder coated getting a coat of high temp silver. We were afraid that the standard low temp stuff would have problems with the exhaust manifold being right under it.

Re: Duplicolor Engine Enamel clear?
Verdict:
The silver 500* with out the clear that I have used in the past is fine. The clear... leave it on the shelf. As I said previously the manifold was yellowing and I had that stripped again and powder coated silver. The head still has the clear on and it has already yellowed.
