I bought a 1988 stock YJ Sahara and I blew the rear main. I changed the seal and then oil was coming from around the valve cover vent. I pulled the valve cover and it was a mess inside so I broke her all the way down. I can't stroke yet as she is my daily driver. So my plan is as follows:
I am going to use my block and crank with new seals as they are fine.
I will need to do a minor bore.
I just ordered a 92' 4.0l cylinder head from advance for $368.00.
I would like any advice on pistons and cam to give me the best bang for my $$$.
I am also running a 38 Weber
I don't meet the stroker class but I will get there. The jeep is my daily driver and I just can't afford the downtime or $$$ right now to stroke. I have a real good understanding of the head swap but I would really appreciate any advice you vets could give a newcomer on pistons, cam and machine work. I plan on putting the engine back in next week.
Thank You in Advance.

Just gonna throw in some typical stuff.
Probably should have the crank looked at make sure it doesnt need ground etc
as far as pistons just go with a stock oversized one. make sure you look at the wear items bearings seals cam lifters etc

Absolutely. they are checking all dimensions.
I plan on putting in a high volume oil pump. Should I have them do any additional machining and do you have any other recommendations? What cam should I use?

Use a standard volume pump and Speed-Pro ZH825CP pistons. Shave the block ~0.030" to zero deck clearance, use 0.030" shims under the rocker arm bridges, Victor Reinz 0.043" MLS head gasket, CompCams 68-231-4 cam, and Mopar 5249464 valve springs with 4452032 retainers and 4529218 keepers.
The only difference between the stock performance rebuild that you're planning and a stroker is the 4.2 crank/rods so if you can find those items, why not build a stroker?

Awesome!!! Thank You from the bottom of my jeep. I am using the 4.2 rods and being an 88' the are the longer ones. The only difference is I don't have a 4.0 block. We had to bore 30 maybe 40 I don't know the final til tom. I really appreciate your guidance and I will pass it on to the machine shop tom. One more question: I read in a forum to use RC9LYC4 spark plugs. Do you agree?

Re: Please advise Can't Stroke but I'm Rebuilding/ Head Sw
Sorry I forgot that you have a 4.2 engine in your '88 YJ. The pistons that I'd recommended were for a 4.0 block so they won't do if you decide to just overbore your 4.2. The other that I'd recommended are still good though and would work well on an overbored 4.2 with a 4.0 head.
Yeah good choice.I read in a forum to use RC9LYC4 spark plugs. Do you agree?
