New to Stroker..some ??

Post by 93XJ »

Sorry if this is somewhat of a repost, I have searched a good bit and haven't found a suitable answer to the questions I have. If there is a thread I somehow missed, please point me towards it. First off let me say that I own a well maintained 93 Cherokee with about 250k on it. This engine still runs well and performs great, all my original items such as AC and power steering still work well for the age and mileage. I do wheel it in the rocks and I would like to upgrade to something with a bit more power that I could run on pump gas (possibly 87 oct?). I do enjoy driving the Jeep, and it sees about 75-100 miles a week so I'd like to build or buy something reliable. I have aspirations to build and or swap into larger tires and axles soon to make better use of said power. Ultimately the questions would be this.. Can I buy or build a reliable stroker that would work with my old (1993 OBD1/electronics)? If so what would be the most suitable version to build? Could all of this be ran on a low octane or at a minimum of pump grade gas? If yes to all this....what else under-hood would need to be changed to make the swap as painless as possible?

Thanks in advance for any help you guys provide...

If you can't afford to have much downtime for your Jeep, I advise that you follow my example by buying a junkyard 4.0 engine, building that up into a 4.6 stroker, swapping it into your Jeep, and selling off your old engine.
You'll find a lot of useful info. if you click on the two links in my sig., and select which stroker recipe comes closest to your budget and needs.

Thanks for the advice, I'm looking into buying the parts and building it...versus buying one and dropping it in. I called Hesco first to inquire about the price and availability of an Engine from them, not to mention they are close enough to me I could pick one up. The guy on the phone was really rude and arrogant, not to mention it was a stupid high price compared to other quotes I had seen. Are there any other retailers I should shop to compare prices on a drop in engine?

You could try Golen Engine Service.

I do plan on calling them as well, just torn on making this decision as I don't know a ton about the engine stuff, but I've done a lot of reading and I am learning. The price given to me at Hesco was an absurd 6900.00...

Yeah, but you can guarantee that it'll outlast your Jeep and Hesco have the customer service to back it up. It all boils down to whether you're prepared to put a $7000 engine into a $3000 Jeep. I wasn't so I built my own 8+ years ago for mere peanuts.
