it really comes down to personal preference (or budget) as both work fine.
from what i gathered when researching, many went with the High Volume Melling for a few key reasons. i went with the HV also (yet to be installed). it does require you to massage the pan though.

No need for the HV unless you plan on running loose bearing clearances.
If it feels right, then STROKE it!

Know where the HV oil pump came from? It wasn't developed for any particular high performance applications. According to my buddy at JeepTech, it was a military specified pump for some 4.0s that the military used in certain applications and that had a different oil pan. I use them.

Actually straighter cut gears than stock and obviously a bit longer gears. The stock pump has barely discernable angle to the gears.

Who knows what the engines were in. Maybe they didn't need to clear a front axle.

I would assume it was a Jeep, most likely a XJ or TJ.

What he said. A HV oil pump isn't really necessary unless you have loose bearing clearances but if you do use one anyway, just make sure your cold start oil pressure isn't above 60psi otherwise you could accelerate distributor gear wear. My oil pressure is not particularly high at all. Same as my Comanche with stock oil pump.
