Seeing the fans side by side it looks like the late model fan is actually larger, or does it just thicker? Its a bit hard to tell with the parallax.
I have a radiator and overflow from a 94 in my 88..
So my specs are stock 94 cooling system, 99-00 12 curved blade e-fan, and a TRUE tarus E-fan, and a 180* thermo.
The tarus fan was a lovely upgrade..the tarus fan shroud is big enough to cover the radiator, and part of the lower crossmemer..good idea if your an auto trans. OPut a trans cooler in the holes in t he front crossmember, the tarus shroud will cover it and pull air through your trans cooler. Thats exactly what it does for my power steering cooler.
Even in hot summer traffic it was fine, the Tarus fan has never hit the high setting yet, but we will see once my turbo mini-stroker is done.
I've left my jeep running last summer at the lake while playing music so my old crappy battery wouldn't die and even then..1+hrs of idling it never gave me a problem.
The two fans seem to be about the same size. There is clearance between the shroud and the outer ring that all the fan blades attach to on the new fan whereas the old fan did not have an outer ring. That clearance gives the appearance of a bigger opening but I think they are about the same size.
