i found a 258 crank online but when i asked if it was a 4cw or 12cw the guy didnt know. what do i tell him to look for?

Or ask for the stamping # off the crank and compare it to the list in the FAQ

i have seen that everyone is partial to a specific head on here and i was wondering where to find a HO head? what years have them and can i take one off a cherokee and use it on my 02 tj?

i have found 3 cranks all from 79-88 engines. is this the best cranks to get?

Your existing '02 head will do fine so keep it. Just ask the machine shop to magnaflux it for cracks and check it for flatness. You could also ask them to do a 3-angle valve grind to improve airflow at low valve lifts (good for torque). If you're confident at porting a head yourself and you're handy with a die grinder, go for it. Otherwise either leave it to a professional or skip it altogether.

Any 258 crank from '72-'90 will do fine. Some prefer the '87-'90 short nose crank but it's hard to find one.

Make sure the head is a TUPY before doing anything to it.

Newer 0331 heads with improved castings had TUPY stamped on the top between the no.3 and no.4 exhaust valve springs. These heads don't seem to have the cracking problems that are prevalent in '00-'01 heads.
