Re: Stock replacement valve spring?
My used '01 spring was 1.92" free length.
How do you like All Data.... is it worth $27 a year for a DIY'er?

Re: Stock replacement valve spring?
No I don't think so, It's missing a lot of the information you would find in a Haynes. If you need a lot of mechanical specs/wiring diagrams for a lot of different cars it's good.
If you need detailed repair information for a couple cars, buy the Haynes for it.
Another note, I don't know how it is for the jeeps but my 89 mustang haynes is FAR superior to my chilton for the same car.

Re: Stock replacement valve spring?
Just checked the Sealed Power/ Federal Mogul site.... they also list both vs822 and vs1456 springs for a 91 Cherokee.
vs822 are plain cylindrical springs, while the vs1456 are conical, or tapered at one end.
vs822 is listed for 1984-94
vs1456 is listed for 92-98 Dodge trucks.
Maybe this link to the catalog page will work:
http://fme-cat.com/Application.aspx?yea ... cat=Engine
AllData..... now if I could find this spring info there along with complete spring specs, it might be worth it to me.
It's hard to beat the factory service manual.

Re: Stock replacement valve spring?
Not to hijack, but $27 per year? I only paid $30 for 5 years on my TJ.
Alldata for 97 TJ 4.0 says
Part # 53010388 @ $3.70 each (not that the Alldata prices are ever accurate)
61 - 69 lbs @ 1.64 inch
184 - 196 lbs @ 1.216 inch
0.827 - 0.847 inch Inside Diameter
1.876 inch Free Length

Melling:
Application:
To Download the 2010 Melling Engine parts catalog:
http://www.melling.com/Aftermarket/Mell ... brary.aspx
Spring specs:
http://www.melling.com/LinkClick.aspx?f ... &tabid=702
VS-1080 for 1987-91, cylindrical
VS-1282 for 1987-95, conical
No specs given for the VS-2225 1996-2006 springs
Difficult to compare pressures, but the biggest difference appears to be the retainers they use.
Hope that answers your question, finally!

Re: Stock replacement valve spring?
I wouldn't think free height matters, if by free height you mean the length of the spring not installed. You need to look at coil bind, spring rate, and spring diameter.
