01+ head & block stroker

Post by shayne_354 »

Ok, here goes my problem. I have an engine I have to build for a customer. It's for an 01 WJ. He dropped off another 01 long block to use for the build. Pretty standard 4.6 plan. Using new 258 crank, reconed. short rods, short duration cam for 8.8 CR. My issue is the head. I've built 3 strokers in my life. One was a Chevy 383, the other two were Jeep 6 cyls. This will be the first one with the coil per plug ignition and head. I always port out my heads to the normal gasket match, good valve job, and some massaging of the combustion chambers. He plans to use this as a DD and trail rig and he wants to run 87 octane. I even have to use stock exhaust manifolds! I've done this before, but not with the 2 piece manifold. Does anyone vhave any thoughts on how this head will hold up on a stroker? Gonna run a Leigh Performance 63mm TB with 1" spacer, Dodge 5.9 injectors( because that's what I always use). Any thoughts as to longevity, performance, or satisfaction? I know I dont post much of anything on here, but I do pay attention, and I am well versed as an engine rebuilder/builder. Still learning on strokers!

That head is a cast #0331. There were issues for the first few years 99-2001 of manufacture with it cracking. 2002+ are supposed to be the good head having a stamp of "TUPY" between cylinders #3 & #4 between the spring perches. I am also using stock two piece exhaust manifolds, coil rail etc. with mine being a 2002 WJ motor going into my 2000 TJ. Unfortunately, I have nothing to report in the way of performance as I still have yet to install it.

Concerning the fuel injectors you've selected you may want to review the higher fuel pressures the 99'+ Grand Cherokee and 2000+ Wrangers used of 49 psig.
I have a 4.6L STOKER in my 2000 Jeep Wrangler with 4.5" lift on 35" BFG MT and 4.56:1 gears.

Ditch the spacer, rethink your injectors, and get a new or TUPY head.

The '99-'01 #0331 heads are crack-prone junk. Either get a newer TUPY head or look for a reinforced 0331 head from Alabama Cylinder Heads.
I've found that Accel 24lb injectors with EV1 to EV6 adapters work well on mild '01 strokers.
The TB spacer is a waste of space (pun intended) so ditch it.

A related question here on porting the 0331 head....
The exhaust port floor in the head is quite a bit higher than the gasket.... 1/8" or so. Is it worth lowering the floor of the port, or is that actually detrimental to flow since the floor is a low-flow area in the first place? It can be made wider to match the gasket.
Observation...Intake ports in the head are nearly the same size as the gasket, but the intake manifold ports are much smaller.

according to everything i've read here , it's best ,when dealing with porting the 0331 head , to spend a couple hours per cyl. and cc it and port it perfect . then grab a hammer and chisel and slam it right between cyl. 2 and 3 with enough force to crack it . pretty much what is likely to happen any how .

You've hit the nail on the head. Lowering the port floor will hurt airflow. If there's room to raise the port roof, that would be the thing to do.

Ok, going with a short duration cam and an 04 head. No spacer(customer brought it when he delivered the block), and looking for different injectors. He wants this thing to run o 87 octane, but wants to have huge power gains. Trying to beat it into his head that ya dont get both! Half tempted to tell em to come get it. Taking up too much time where I could be making money!

Ok, the engine has been on the road for two months now. He is happy with all but the fuel milage. I guess his thinking was more power=more milage. Now on to my next project. I'm building another stroker for a 98 Grand Cherokee. The big deal is it will run on E85 only!!!!!! I've got plans n details, but will start a new thread when I get started on it.. ANYInput is welcome as this is a new direction for me.
