Buying a rebuilt & ported head

Post by 604rail_king »

has anyone used this ebay sellers rebuilt & ported heads?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chrysler-4-0-Re ... 5188b019b0

i originally came across this ebay head in Muad'dib's build thread as he out lined he was intending on buying one, however it looks like he went in another direction. i emailed the seller asking for further info and pictures - he sent these 2 saying it was the last 7120 they ported

i have a 7120 head that would need to be taken to the machine shop for rebuilding and attempt to port it (need to buy tool/abrasive), however for not much more ($100-130) i could get a ported head of this ebay seller.

I did not go in another direction. I bought the eBay head from them and when I received it, it was pretty rusty and dirty looking. Reading their feedback, it appears that this is a common problem with them.. the port and polish job looked good to my noob eyes.... And honestly since this is my first stroker I'm not sure if it hurt performance or not.

When I contacted them about the rust, they said it should cleanup easily. I took the head to my machinist, and they told me they had to shave it to remove the rust and also give me a valve job on all the intake valves as they were seeing light shine through.

I had the machine shop do the work and then I told the seller about it. They refunded me a portion of what I paid for the head.

FWIW, my combustion chamber volume was about 60cc's across all 6 even after the machinists shaved the head .001.

My conclusion is that it still may have been worth the trouble as I ended up getting a ported and polished head pretty cheap compared to what you would have to pay someone or do yourself. This doesn't mean that the job was done correctly though. Someone with more experience would have to chime in about it. My stroker runs great and appears to have a ton of power... So from my experience I'm doing ok. For all I know my head was crappy and is hurting my performance. Maybe a future dyno will tell the tale?

I believe I mentioned all this in my build thread.
If it feels right, then STROKE it!

ahhh ... i did see that you had some rust issues with a head and had to get it reworked with your machinist. i didnt realize it was a ported head from THIS ebay seller... ive been scanning lots of threads on here lately and skim for info at times, so im sure i miss bits of info at times. it took me 3 nights to read thru SilverXJ's entire thread

id prefer to have any machining of parts done locally VS buying them pre-machined/ect off the internet as ive seen alot of scenarios like yours where its not quite as advertised. machining can just add up too fast at times. the other option (but its not in the budget) is a Patriot alum head for $1000(?)

i do feel that a ported head will be necessary for my planned 4.7L poor mans stroker. a friend may help me port my head however ive never attempted any porting other than some minor clean up on a previous cars intake mani.

has anyone else bought a head from these guys ?
