anyone think about the trany?
hey all, new to the site...... considering building a stroker for my cherokee but a little concerned about how much torque the auto trans can handle in it's stock form...is there aftermarket support to beef it up or is there a swap i should be considering?

These AW4's came in Supra's and can handle alot of power. No need to worry about it.
If it feels right, then STROKE it!

I don't know how much torqe can it transmit, I had it runing in my Stroker with Supercharger (about two weeks, until that the engine broke) and not notice anything strange or more slippage in the converter.

The AW4 is pretty stout. Put a cooler on it and it will last a lot longer. There are a few mods you can do. You can increase the shift pressure (I think that is what it is). You will have to search on that. It entails adding washers to stiffen some springs. I have not tried it myself. The PCM also have certain modifications you can do. You can have torque control and something else removed which will give you firmer shifts. That is just in the PCM, not the TCM. I had that done, but the company that did it for me isn't doing it anymore. But even in stock form it will hold up to a stroker.

Re: anyone think about the trany?
The current transmission in my Cherokee was pulled out from under my friends porch after sitting for 3 years.
The only reason I replaced it was, I damaged the front pump when swapping an engine. (it was whining and grinding itself apart, but still worked fine)
Fast forward 2 years and 35K miles it still works fine with 20 year old fluid.
TL:DR
An AW4 will still work with 20 year old fluid after sitting under a porch for 3 years

Proud owner of many stroker parts, that have not yet spontaneously assembled themselves.TurboTom wrote: Not sure of your rules...but you need to start with an engine that works best for the rules and cheat from there!

Good for 400+ H.P.. Dont know why anyone would consider a "swap" or upgrades to this apparently, indestructable transmission. Although line pressure can be easily "tweeked" with a cable adjustment(tighter is better). On a pure race application, cable can be pulled all the way out and "tied up", causing the firmist shifts at any throttle position. Hold on!

Is this the cable that runs to the throttle body?racing89 wrote:Good for 400+ H.P.. Dont know why anyone would consider a "swap" or upgrades to this apparently, indestructable transmission.
