Bolt-ons
Right now with my build I am looking to do every single bolt on possible, to see what power is actually possible with the 4.0 in 'stock' format. I already have a a new 4.0 long block so thats why im not considering a stroker, or an engine swap.
as of now, I have gathered most of what I can think of
injectors
true 'ram-air' intake
bored throttle body
intake manifold
borla header
full custom, mandrel exhaust,no cat
AC delete with Alt. relocation
header heatcoated and wrapped
electric fan conversion
Now the only other things I could think of, but still have some questions about.
Solid motor mounts/transmission mounts? I know on cars these make a HUGE difference. but I wasnt sure of any unseen drawbacks, if anyone has used them in a jeep or wheeling situation. A little extra vibration I can deal with. Is there any real reason I should get poly mounts instead of solid ones? right now I can get solid ones MUCH cheaper.
Intake/Exhaust manifold spacer. I have heard of running a 1/2" manifold spacer, but to me it just kinda seemed like that would just be extending all the drawbacks to our head design...Only plus I could think of is the fuel mixing would be better.
AFR monitoring, I heard that the obd2 jeeps already have the ability to read the AFR. I always thought the 02s were narrow band, and couldnt do much more than see if the cat is there. If I can in fact get a reading, then this would save me $200 on a wideband.
the near future plans (after everything is running right) include either a dual throttle body setup, and then I would add spray If I need more power, or a supercharger if I stay with a single TB. I would also consider an electric water pump, 5speed swap, light weight pulleys, a cam, head studs, and of course some form of tuning (probably megasquirt)
let me know If you guys have anything I didnt think of, any thought on my questions, or any drawbacks to my plan of action.

Re: Bolt-ons
I went the bolt-on route before I built my stroker. I Initially did the following with an estimated 220hp/262lbft at the crank:
Homebrew CAI
Bored 62mm TB
62mm TB spacer (1" thick)
Borla header
Full 2.5" catless exhaust from header back
Dual electric fans
Relocated IAT sensor to CAI
Intake manifold heatshield
Ford Racing 24lb injectors
MAP adjuster
I then ported the head and milled 0.010" from the deck surface (CR 9.1:1 with 0.043" head gasket) and that raised outputs to an estimated 235hp/269lbft at the crank. It was a very nice set up and it ran beautifully until I became infected with stroker fever.

Re: Bolt-ons
well with my deleted AC and ram air intake it should put me up to where you were with 235. I also have a heat shield I forgot to mention that.
how was the jeep to drive then? I imagine that it will be plenty. and I dont see any of my mods hurting gas mileage, they should all help it. which is one of the main reasons I shied away from a stroker is the decrease in mpgs.
do you think tricking the MAP would be enough to street tune dual throttle bodies?

Re: Bolt-ons
Not without bigger injectors. Mind you, I had to lean out my 24lb injectors when I was running the 235hp 4.0 set-up. It was beautiful to drive but with most of the extra power coming from 2500rpm to the rev limiter, the engine began to feel relatively soft at low rpm even though it was stronger than stock. The 4.6 stroker certainly put that right and overall gas mileage is almost identical (slightly worse in city, slightly better on highway).
The 235hp 4.0 needed to be revved higher to access the extra performance, whereas the 4.6 stroker has a mountain of torque from very low rpm so its performance is effortless.

Re: Bolt-ons
I spoke with one of my buddies here in town, that has a lot more high power experience then I do. and had some experience with solid motor mounts...that is definitely not an option.
as far as tuning goes...he believes I should be fine with the updated injectors (23.5 lbs?) I think the reason you maxed your injector is the modification to the head. IF i happen to max out the injector I can always just go up one or two grades in octane.
did you have any type of AFR monitoring? im installing a wideband, and egt. both should help me fine tune the MAP controller, and should be enough to keep the dual TBs street friendly.

Re: Bolt-ons
I have M.O.R.E.poly "bombproof"mounts. they deffinately make it shake, but with a stick it's not bad. I got 2 sets(were on sale) and put 1 in on the drv side of my auto mj(quik fix)........ WAY to much shake- in traffic, in park its ok
here's what I could find so far- pic wise,i'll get more later

Re: Bolt-ons
I imagine yours is stroked? about how much power is needed to pull the front wheels off the ground? Id mess myself...in the good way. LOL. is it still 4wd? or is it just 2wd? For right now mine is auto, but I MAY go manual sooner or later. you want to get rid of the extra motor mounts you bought? what about tranny mounts?
sorry for all the questions but im close to wrapping this up and I need my bases covered.
here is a pic of my air induction scoop, IDK what its really called. Im still on the fence about it, thats why I asked for more pics of yours.

Thanks, I really am on the fence about using it. so many people say it is awesome, but I feel like if I saw it on the street I would probably make fun of it.

Nope. NOT a stroker. It's .060 over ,zero decked and the head milled .040,with a comp 68-321-4 4* adv (IIRC) ,2wd ,centerforce stage II,hurst shifter , ladder bars (big reason for wheelies) 8.8 with 4.10's and 11.5-28-15 ET streets,oh yeah, and chassis stiffenersmountaineerjeff wrote:I imagine yours is stroked? about how much power is needed to pull the front wheels off the ground? is it still 4wd? or is it just 2wd? I havent had it dynod yet. its in another xj @ the moment-4wd auto.I'm pretty sure the hg(victor) is seeping, so i'm not going to dyno it till i get that straight.
I went with the smaller scoop so it wasnt so out there, but it still grabs everyone's attn. some joker in town even cut a hole in his i-6 pinto 's hood and put a tall regular airfilter on it after I did mine

Honestly it was WAY more violent and even scary before the wheelies. when the suspension bottomed out it would kick the ass end to the left -like a fox body mustang on pinksmountaineerjeff wrote:Id mess myself...in the good way. LOL.

I put a limit strap on the susp and the wheels came up so smooth and calm I was like, what just happened? but by the time I got back to the pitts I looked like this-

I got my intake manifold today, and it will get coated tonight, but IF i dont use the air intake I have, I need to figure out some type of configuration, and a ram-air hood scoop is the best answer. I was thinking getting mine painted black would keep it from being as eye catching.
What do you guys use for manifold gaskets? got a part # or do you just RTV/permatex it?
what about anyone here of running a 1/2" spacer? I read it in a post once being beneficial, but I havent been able to find it again.

Re: Bolt-ons
whats your 1/4 time/trap? I feel like I should be capable of very similar performance. Mine is 4wd, but its also a lighter 2 door. the frame is inherently stronger due to mine being a 2nd gen, but I will also have a reinforced frame. My interior is stripped, and it is an SE to begin with (bare essentials). Plus I have the AC deleted which helps power and weight wise. IF the 4wd slows me down too much im not afraid to add some N20.4.whoa wrote: Nope. NOT a stroker. so far i have a stock trans mt.

Right now im looking to make the most well rounded street legal XJ. solid 1/4 time, very street friendly, high mpgs, along with being trail and mud worthy.
