Lifter bore too small??

Post by Tinga »

We're having....issues with our lifters. We have an 0335 block that's going into a 02 TJ
We've ordered 3... count 'em 3 sets of lifters and 2 are too small for the bore ( from Comp) and WILL NOT GO IN!
One set was sent with the damn Cam. ( 68-232-4).

What is going on?? Are they supposed to go through the bottom or what?? Our mechanic now wants to bore the fricking lifter holes to fit the lifters COMP has sent us twice now..

So you have 3 sets,36? Lifters? And 2 lifter bores are too small?yep, if 36 lifters fit the other 10 holes you need to bore them, i would think

Mic the OD of the lifter and the ID of the bore. I don't see how that is possible especially since the comp lifters are a bit smaller than stock lifters. Maybe there is just a bit of rust on the bores.

Did he shot peen the block to clean it? If so it has a possibly to roll the edges of the lifter bores a bit.

Yes we have 3 sets of lifters and 2 sets are too big on ALL the lifter bores. Can't even get them in.The third set has waaay to much slop when the lifters are inside the hole.

I'm not sure if the block was shot peened at all. I'll have to check the invoice. I was just wondering if this has happened to anybody before. Our mechanic friend is supposedly getting the tool/bit to do it

I had the same issue with the last stroker motor I put together. The block was shot peened and came back from the machine shop super clean bare cast iron. Looked fresh from the casting! As I was finishing up on getting the bottom end together, I found that I could not get 3 lifters into their bore. It didn't matter which lifter I tried, they would not go! I finally found a socket that fit almost snug in the lifter bore and wrapped a piece of 400g to it a lightly worked the lip of the bore. After several tries, the lifter began to drop in. I continued to do this until they dropped like they should. Kinda stressful with all fresh parts already installed in the bottom end! Sounds like if you get a really clean block back from the shop, most likely it's been peened. Check the lips of the lifter bores, they may be rolled over a bit....

I've read about the lifter bore and shot peening on SpeedTalk. What they do is make a couple passes with a small hone to clean them up.
