A close look at Barney Navarro's indy motor

You guys might enjoy looking at this motor up close. This AMC dude has tons of pics, he owns the remaining examples of the Navarro turbo rambler engines.
It's a wildly different way to develop horsepower but has some details that really get the mental gears turning.
The manifolds are fused, the block is sleeved, the mains grooved, the timing cover has bypass oiling, its a strange beast!

yep, started its life as a 232, dont remember how big it ended up, but made pretty big nasty power for indy racing. lots of rumours going around about the crank too, i cant remember but somethin is tellin me the crank was custom with a custom material, not stock anyway

The guy who owns the motors and website said the displacement was 182 ci!
That's jaw dropping.

Yes, and no. Destroked lets it spin, and also lets the boost build. That's where the power is- up top

In the Jan 2011 popular hot rodding they say it ran with "105 psi of boost producing 700hp"

I can buy the 700hp, but the 105psi of boost. :o  ................. not so much.

The cam does look like a roller profile but one of the lobes shows what looks like flat tappet wear pattern.

The article in the Sept '69 issue of "Popular Hot Rodding" on the AMC six's says that Navarrow's engine was putting out 560HP on straight alky @ 6000RPm's, no boost or displacement figures are given?
You can get more power out of ANY engine!!!

Got a copy of that article you could scan? Methinks it would make interesting reading...
