Hey so I'm a little confused here...
CIMG0280.jpg
Is my oe cam retainer not supposed to fit on the cam?

I honestly just don't remember how it was when I took it apart. I know it's probably in the FSM or the Timing set instructions, but neither of those are here with me now, I was only test fitting it to check the cam bearings, but now I'm concerned.

You discard the cam retainer and bolts when using an aftermarket cam in a later block. It is replaced by the bolt, washer, spring and pin used on the earlier cams. Part numbers are in the MISC Part numbers thread in the FAQ section. Your cam gear will also have to be changed to fit the cam if you didn't buy the correct set to begin with.

Ok, thanks, I think my original block had the spring and pin, out of my 98, I just have to go dig through that stuff to try and find it. I bought the comp cams kit that came with a timing chain, a big beefy one at that.

It is presenting another concern though, the sprocket for the crank seems to be too big for the key to reach the oil slinger...

Thanks again for your help Silver.

Doesn't matter if the slinger touches the key or not. Its not under any load and is simply held in place from the force of the harmonic balancer against the gear.

Ok thanks. I feel stupid about that now, obviously the keyway was to slide it over the other key, duh.

I'm about to head out and look for that spring and bolt and pin or whatever, if I can't find it I guess I'll have to pick it up from the dealer.

I have to order a new timing chain guide anyway, since both of the ones I pulled had broken ones.
Is the guide even necessary? can I just delete it?

No. Its on the tension side (nice.. considering it needs to be on the slack side). Earlier engines don't even have it.

Yes. If you are using a double roller chain, remove the brackets as well.

well I found the bolt/spring/pin!!! w00t!

I don't think my chain (in the picture) is a double roller, does that mean I shouldn't go without a new guide? I'm a little confused by that part...
