new stroker build about to happen. some questions to ask...

Post by kylerobb1 »

i know there are plenty of posts out there like this. but i got questions and can't find the exact answer i'm looking for. i'm in highschool and need to keep this as CHEAP as possible, and run on 87. i will use the yj crank and rods. i'm not building a race engine here, just something with some pep to it :D
1. what is the maximum compression ratio i can run while running 87 octane? if i cant run 87 all year round i wont build this engine.
2. what all needs to be machined on the engine to make this happen and what would be a figure money wise that i'm looking at? i know i'll have to bore .30 over and machine the usual bearings and such. but decking? head? i also know i'll need to cc the head. thats fine.
3. also any pointers on quench would be appreciated.

thank you so much guys

I run mine (9.25:1 CR, 0.088" quench) on 87 octane during the cooler months when it's less than 90*F outside.

I DID THE SAME BUILD, BUT NOT 30 OVER. MINE WILL RUN ON 87, BUT I RUN 89 JUST BECAUSE. AND I DIDNT DO ANY MACHINE WORK TO IT, AND RUNNING THE STOCK CAM WITH 183,000 ON IT. RUNS GREAT THE ONLY THING THATS NOT STOCK IS GOING TO BE THE INJECTORS, IF THEY EVER GET HERE. DAMN HOLIDAYS GOT THE MAIL ALL SCREWED UP!

What's the deal with petrol (gas) for your guys in the states? It seems quite low octane, the minimum octane fuel here for us here in Australia is 91 with additional choices of 95 and 98 at every pump. Even our diesel gets the high octane treatment!

I can advise that decking/machining the head can be worked out once you know what compression ratio you want to run in conjunction with gasket, piston and rod (using yj i see) selection. It's too hard to advise how much to deck off the block or shave off the head when you don't have any other parts chosen just yet. A good start once you start to get everything together is to use the Stroker Compression Ratio Calculator on this site (just to the right and below the banner up the top).

I can't tell you estimates on cost because i'm in Aus but I will be getting my parts back from the machine shop next week and can spill what I paid with a service breakdown if it will help any.

Dino's a bit of a legend around these parts and he would have a build up to suit your budget, try the recipes section of his holy bible of an amc stroker site at http://www.jeep4.0performance.4mg.com/stroker.html. Perhaps the low budget rockcrawler or poor man's stroker set-up will suit you.

Good luck with your build Kyle.

The octane ratings are just calculated different. US is RON+MON/2. Outside it is usually just RON. http://www.btinternet.com/~madmole/Refe ... ONPON.html explains it better plus has a rough chart at the bottom comparing the grades.

Yes I'm a Greek born in Australia. With my surname Zorbas, it's pretty much a given.

I'll be in Greece next year to complete my service!

Cheromaniac,

I didn't realize there were members here from Dubai. I am a very new member, as you can see here, and was JUST in Dubai for a few days. I would have gladly met for a beer and to see your rig. :) Ohh well, that's how it is, I guess.
