Lifter Noise, What can I do about it?

So I finally got my jeep back from my machinist (who ended up replacing the head as well as his crappy head bolt hole sleeving) and I drove it around yesterday.

Problem is, I have a really loud tick at idle and it gets faster as the revs climb.

It seems like a single tick, from one source, as opposed to my first startup noise which was a cacophony.

When I first started the Jeep at my machinists shop, it made the noise, and my machinist walked up, listened for a sec and said, 'thats a lifter'

Then he walked away and went back to work.

I've got it at home now, but I'm wondering wtf I can do?

They are brand new Hylift Johnson lifters. The only weird thing I noticed was when I was first assembling the engine, back in July, I set the pushrods on the lifters and pushed down on them to see if they were in the lifters and to just kind of feel the lifters' movement.
Wellllll.... I remember pushing down on one pushrod and not having it bounce back up..... And its right where the noise seems to be coming from...

So, if I collapsed the lifter by hand, is there any way I can fix it without taking the head off and replacing it????

I really don't have alot of time since my mechanical engineering classes have restarted so I want to fix this as easily as possible....

You didn't do any damage by collapsing the lifter by hand. Pull the valve cover and tap the effected rocker with a soft face mallet to see if you can loosen the lifter. May just be a piece of dirt stuck in it. Or could just be some air trapped in it.

I just started it with the valve cover off to see if I could identify the lifter. And I noticed.....

THERES DEFINITELY NO OIL COMING THROUGH THE PUSHRODS AT ALL

WTF

I'm using hylift-johnson lifters (part number LIFB-2089) and Trend Chromoly pushrods (.8 wall 9.6")..........

I'm using a regular oil pump and I have 40+ pounds of pressure at idle when cold

I just checked toplines catalog for my lifters to make sure they sent me the correct ones, but of course my part number isnt in their catalog...

I think the 2089 lifter they sent you is for the Chrysler slant 6 which oils the valve train through the rocker shaft, not the push rod.

Do you have a URL for Topline's catalog? The one I found didn't even list and Jeep applications nor the correct 2011 lifter.

Stupid question, but didn't you prime the engine with the valve cover off and make sure oil comes up through the pushrods?

No I didn't.... Stupid move I know but I only had access to the drill for a period before my rocker arms came. The Jeep is my DD and all my friends had left town for the summer so I was very limited in mobility options. Now I get to kick myself. I guess the second moral of the story is not to trust topline to give the right part when you say it's a jeep/amc i-6...

If none of the rods are getting oil through them,you definitely need to tear it down :( That sucks 'cause the rockers and valve tips were run dry also. Did the shop assemble it? if so they should've caught the difference in lifters. :smack:

I assembled it unfortunately..... I thought I compared the two but thought thought he farted ....

Looks like I get to utilize tomorrow to pull the head tomorrow. Thankfully I only drove it 20 miles and there was still some assembly lube left up there. Everything looks ok so far

Check the valve stems, push rod and rockers for any wear.

Yes the HT2089 lifters are for the slant six, they oil backwards thrue the shaft, rocker arms and the pushrods, they have no hole in the side to take oil from the galley so they have no way to oil the top end!
The correct ones are the HT2011's for the AMC/Jeep sixes/V8's and are suitable replacements for the Chrysler V8's, big and small (the AMC lifters work in the Chrysler's but Chrysler's don't work in the AMC's so they only make AMC lifters)
And YES! check the top end carefully for any wear! even with the limited mileage on it!
Whoever ordered those lifters obviously cant read or really doesn't give a crap!???, at the very least I'd make them exchange the lifters for the correct ones!
You can get more power out of ANY engine!!!

Exactly, I'd say it was my fault but they don't have a catalog anywhere online that lists more than 4cyl import applications so I had to trust them to send me the correct ones when I told them my application. I should have seen there was no side hole tho...

CRAAAAAAAP anyone know if I'm going to need different length pushrods since I measured off of the Chrysler lifters?

The lifters so vary slightly in the push rod seat height. I wouldn't worry about it until you get the lifters in and check.

It looks like, based on Comp's data (http://www.compcams.com/catalog/COMP201 ... 10_278.jpg) that both the AMC and Chrysler lifters have the same seat height of 1.88"! So I may have dodged a bullet there! :cheers:

Topline is also going to give me a discount on the lifters so I guess thats something, even if its just a small discount.

hey outta curiousity what fuel injection system did you end up going with? dude on naxja build a turbo set up and used aem's piggyback setup and swears by how easy it is to use and setup so i'm thinking about using that now instead of ms3
