Gauges?
I'm thinking of installing two gauges in the a-pillar. One I want is transmission temp. But I am undecided on the other. I considered a secondary oil pressure gauge, with the sensor installed on the rear sensor bung, like on WJs. Its at the rear end of the main galley. I do have a working dash oil pressure gauge too though in the usual sensor location for the XJ, right at the oil entrance to the main galley. I could also just relocate the stock sensor to the rear port. I feel that it may give a better reading on the true oil pressure. Some other options would be a vacuum gauge, oil temp, or other?

Trans Temp and oil temp.

I put a oil pressure gauge just to the right of the instrument cluster. This spot is always an option that way you can use another type of gauge on the pillar. I also found that it is easier to see because it is right by the instrument cluster anyways.

Additional engine parameters I monitor; WB A/F, Oil Temp and Exhaust temp. I do DD and slow off road beach driving in 95+ heat. I think the WB A/F and Exhaust temp go hand in hand. If I was adding only one I'd go with oil and in your case since you’re interested in trans temp it seems logical.

I'm not so sure how useful an oil temp gauge would be considering the oil is close to the engine coolant temp anyhow. However, one option is to use the trans temp gauge as a oil temp as well.. two senders and a switch. Two gauges in one. That is one option.yuppiexj wrote:Trans Temp and oil temp.
This is on a 2000? I know the pre 97s have a good spot for it, but there really isn't any room to the right of the cluster large enough for a gauge. And I also have some switches to the right of the cluster.00xj74 wrote:I put a oil pressure gauge just to the right of the instrument cluster. I already have a wideband, exhaust temp gauge is a little too pricey now plus I don't know how much use it would be with an wideband..nukfyrsq wrote:Additional engine parameters I monitor; WB A/F, Oil Temp and Exhaust temp.

Re: Gauges?
A bit off the specific topic, but here's a couple of questions. As stated earlier oil temp follows closely with coolant temp, so at what temperature would you consider your oil getting too hot? Even with multi viscosity oils at what minimum temperature would you like to be at on a cold start up (let’s say ambient of 30 degrees) before placing the engine under load?

Re: Gauges?
Coolant gets up to temp faster than oil, that's for sure. I can gauge my oil is up to temp when the oil pressure drops from 40-50psi cold to 25-30 psi hot. My brother never has let his Jeeps get up to temp before he WOTs out the neighborhood(these engines are indestructible).
