rich with stock injectors
so, i'm having a real problem here. my 4.6 was built last summer, renix motor with Lunati cam p&p head 2 1/2" exhaust. ran all summer with small problems. with the advice from all here, i ran 24#er's. that made it run rich as hell and washed out the rings and bearings.
now its back from the builder with new rings, bearings, pretty much everything. i put new o2 sensor, e3 plugs, adjustible fpr, bored renix throttle body, and added an AEM wideband.
it won't hardly run so i put the stock injectors back in. runs better but still rich (black smoke out exhaust). the wideband says around 14 idle and maxes out the gauge when revving past 17, which should be lean. fuel pressure at 35psi.
what do i do? hate to mess it up again.

How is it rich if it is 17:1? Why are you using E3s?

Re: rich with stock injectors
the exhaust smells of gas really strongly and it washed out the cylinders. black smoke is too much fuel isn't it? e3's are supposed to be a good plug arn't they?

Re: rich with stock injectors
What year is your jeep?
Yes, black smoke is usually unburnt fuel. But why is your meter showing 17:1? What does it show when driving?
Have you indexed your distributor correctly? Did you remove the ears to index it?
How is your spark?
Were all the cylinders washed?
Take our the E3s for now and put in Champions or NGKs if you have a 99+ Jeep. You can play with gimmicks after you fix this issue.

Re: rich with stock injectors
1990, i'm not going to drive it til i get the problem fixed, its too expensive to fix. do i index it like the ho dizzy? we used the point the rotor at 4o'clock instructions. no i haven't cut off the ears. yes all the cylinders were washed. there was gas standing on the 1 and 6 pistons when the head was pulled. i had regular stock replacement plugs the first time around. should i get a accel coil and wires to help the spark? or can you suggest a better ignition setup? i appreciate you help. thanks

Re: rich with stock injectors
I don't know if the Renix distributor is indexed the same way as the HO.
You won't find out what the engine is really doing until you actually drive it. It will behave differently under load. That black smoke you see could be old fuel or oil from the failure left in your exhaust system.
Accell is crap, many coil failures. MSD is what you want, but I don't think this is a coil failure. You coil maybe bad, and the MSD is pretty cheap, but I would try first. And change your plugs.. search on here for the correct heat range of plug to use.
Have you had your injectors checked at all? I would sent them off for cleaning or servicing. Possibly poor flow or stuck open. What the history behind the 24# you tried?
I am still not convinced it is actually running rich.

Re: rich with stock injectors
ok, i got some rc9's, then got a map sensor adjuster. new map sensor. now with the map adj on 4.2, reving it up the afr goes to 14 but at idle its 10. fuel pressure is at 37psi. this is all with the stock injectors now. could i have one stuck open? the have 220,000 mi on them. it has always gotten bad fuel mileage, and when i got it it had been sitting for a few years. i'm getting closer with you guys help so keep it coming. thanks

Re: rich with stock injectors
You can pull away the fuel rail with the injectors installed and then turn ignition on to pressurize the rail and look to see if any injectors are spraying/dribbling/etc.

Re: rich with stock injectors
If you have one injector that's staying stuck open, the plug in the corresponding cylinder should be black and smell of raw fuel. How do the plugs look?joshbaker wrote:ok, i got some rc9's, then got a map sensor adjuster. new map sensor. now with the map adj on 4.2, reving it up the afr goes to 14 but at idle its 10. fuel pressure is at 37psi. this is all with the stock injectors now. could i have one stuck open?
