I've looked around, but haven't found an answer. I have begun the gathering process to build a stroker. On the cheap, as much as posibble. However, I've heard a lot about needing zinc additive with flat tappet cams. I assume that is aftermarket cam.
What other options are there? Do roller cams, rockers, etc. alleviate this problem?

Re: zinc additive
That is for any new cam and lifter combo. The newer oils don't supply enough for break in. There is no roller lifter made for the I-6 yet but a number of people are working on it. Roller rockers might help but the problem is between the cam and the lifter. Follow the break in advise from your cam manufacturer, throw in a can of zinc additive for the first couple of oil changes, make sure your valve geometry is correct...springs correct height for cam and stuff like that and you should have no issue.

Re: zinc additive
If I run a stock cam, then there should be no zinc problem either?

Re: zinc additive
505 Performance makes a roller cam. And you need to run a high zinc oil the entire time, not just break in. Or rather higher than the most recent oil rating. Also, using a stock cam won't guarantee anything. I have two damaged stock cams.. from a 2000 and one from a 2006

Re: zinc additive
Some interesting info from Comp Cams at:
http://www.compcams.com/DefaultWide.asp
under "Flat tappet tech bulletin".
Just got my cam for my build also . This is also an area of concern for me.
I have been hearing of a lot of I6 failures recently, with information pointing towards oil composition changes.
Any recommendations on types of zinc additive options?

edit: just found a large topic body on "oil" .
tnx.
