spacer ring on crank

Post by papasoncj »

My machinist asked me if I wanted to cut off the 1mm or .250" from the front of my 4.2L crank, or use a spacer ring between the bolt and the 4.0L harmonic balancer to push it futher back onto the crank. Any thoughts on this either way. Its $50 versus $5 Thx Mike

I really don't think there is a difference. Just what your personal preference is and what the machine shop wants to charge.

I was thinking of making a Cup that would replace the washer on the front of the crank, so you would not have to cut it. Anybody interested?

I had one machined from an old 258 HB--with the cost of shipping the HB, cutting the center out, marking the 10cm, and paying the machinist to cut it was about the same cost(but more time) as hesco's $35 spacer.

I purchased a hesco spacer for my long nose crank. My question is; how far does the crank nose extend past the balancer? OR,How do I know that the space has been installed properly? Is it possible to go too far, or just put the appropriate amount of torque on the bolt, and does the spacer change the amount of torque? What is the correct torque? Right now the nose protrudes to the point that the very front of the key way is perfectly flush with the balancer., but it appears the serpentine belt doesn't quit line up with the idler pulley. Please...any insight would be appreciated.

Its not possible to go to far. You want the balancer to be bottomed out on the crank base/oil slinger.

What I do is rent an installer tool from advance auto or autozone. Run the balancer on as far as it will go with that tool only. When the tool bottoms out on the crank I spin the tool back and install the spacer. Now there will be some movement before the spacer hits the woodruff key. You have to check several times in pulling the balancer on that the spacer is lined up with the woodruff key. I usually back the tool out 3 times to make sure the spacer is lined up with the key.

505 Performace has the spacer for $20.00... I kind of like the design of it a little better. I found it too late though....

Is that different than Hesco's? I kinda pictured it as having to look like that.

Are any of them (Hesco/505/any one else) heat treated? I was going to make one if they are not.

Hesco's looks like aluminum tube stock with a notch in it for the woodruff key. Heat treated? What for, it doesn't see that much stress.

I was just wondering cause that's something I can't get done quickly and washers that are either through or case hardened are nice cause they torque nice and don't gall. Thought it would justify buying one instead of making one....

If you have any spare/bad balancers around just make a few spacers from that. Make them a little larger than the end of the crank left over.
