Stock XJ rear end width???

Post by crustodd »

Hey Jeepers,
My Dana 'Turdy Five is about toast due to the strokers power. I am lookin' at swappin' in a 9" ford. I can get one from a local wrecking yard for $150. What width does it need to be?? I have a co-worker that may be able to line me up with one that already has a Detroit locker installed, but it's around 56", I think. HELP, anyone

Thanks,
Todd

Why not a ford 8.8 instead of the 9"?

I believe you want a 58" WMC to WMC. Go for a 8.8 from a ford explorer, They are almost the exact right width and most come with a limited slip diff. If you wheel it at all the 9" would be a better choice for the added strength.

Hey guys,
I have considered ALL the rear end choices. I could pick up a Dana 44 from an XJ for $150 and I think the guy said it'd need brakes and it was an open diff. What do you guys think of the Aussie locker or the Loc
k Right? I was leaning towards the 9" with a Detroit locker as a "final" solution and I must admit, I like full-throttle hole-shots  I need a STOUT rear that can take a whuppin'. I probably won't ever go bigger than 31's, but I have a lead foot. I do off road a bit, but mostly in sand.

Thanks,
T~

Given your critera the D44 or a ford 8.8 will suffice. Thats a killer deal for the 44 if it was pulled from a XJ. Then it would bolt right in. Convert it to disk brakes and bolt it up.

Please let me know if you dont go with the 44. I will want to purchase it.

could someone tell me how much wider a widetrack 44 is than a narrow track 44. is there a width difference between the 8.8 and the 44? what kind of axles are under a 78 jeep cherokee with a 360? ive got easy access to one of those! i hate asking so many questions :smack:

Go for the Cherokee 44 or the Sploder 8.8", the 8.8 is about 1 1/2-2" NARROWER than the Cherokee axle and these are the ONLY two options you have listed that will not require new wheels or redrilled axle to have the correct wheel bolt pattern.
ANYTHING! is an upgrade from a 35! especially if it has the traclock in it!, it's pretty much accepted as the WEAKEST! rear axle Jeep has ever used, even the old 27's are stronger!

If you have the money you can get the Super88 kit from Superior Gear and Axle. The C-clip eliminators are .75" thick (each) which puts the axle back to the XJ factory width.

The 8.8 will take all the abuse you can throw at it, especially if you are only running 31s. There are people out there running them reliably with 37s locked behind v8s.

Just curious, are there any driveline length changes when doing the 8.8 swap?

Just to let everyone know another option I took the chrysler 8 3/4 out of my '65 B-Body dodge and it was within 1/4 inch of stock width, same wheel bolt pattern, and same pumpkin location as stock. Welded perches on it and got a U-joint to convert and off I went. It doesn't have self adjusting brakes but I think with a later model backing plate it can. U can also put station wagon brakes on it which are an inch larger, but it is already and inch larger than the stock jeep. 8 3/4" were used in just about everything that didn't get a Dana 60 (which is what I put in the car) so they are plentiful and you can run 10's on em in a full body car so they are way strong enough for he jeep. Lockers are readily available and came stock and they have a drop out carrier like a 9" with a wide variety of gear sets available.
