Pressing the bearings...

Post by mendelmax »

Hi.

I've been working on my axle, and I installed differential bearings today. The thing that makes me nervous is that I pressed them with the OUTER race, instead of pressing the cup. The reason was that the rollers cage was sticking far enough to crush if I pressed it there, and I didn't have special tool to do the job. I pressed with 5 tons of pressure, which didn't seem to be extremely high to me, but then my friend told me I could have damaged my bearings this way.

So the question is- how big is the chance that I damaged my bearings by pressing them this way? Has anyone done it before?
