Western Engine Supply stroker...

Post by RayburnRacer »

I just trashed my stock 4.0l in my tj and im looking to buy a stroker long block on a budget. Im not considering TItan because of all the negative things i have heard about them. I can't afford a Golen or any of the bad-a longblocks out and i don't have the time or trust my local machine shops enough to build a stroker out of my motor.

I found a company called Western Engine Supply out of colorado. They make a 4.7l longblock that seems to be legit. They have a list of outstanding parts which i have seen alot on here. Motor comes with a good warranty and they said they would guarantee everything in writing.

I wanted to see if anyone had any insight on this company and their stroker motor.

Thanks,

They don't require a core so i plan on building a stroker out of my 4.0l (slowly and when i find the time) and stick it into my MJ. That way if i trash the western stroker i have a spare to swap.

Looks like a short rod stroker. Lots of people on here have built that type, but most have the pistons dished (20 plus ccs). Might have to run premium fuel in it.

A few things I would ask...
What comp cam and springs? Most people on here haven't been able to use comp springs (wrong size retainer/lock combo).
Are the pistons dished?
What is the dynamic compression ratio? Can be figured on this website with cam specs, deck height, gasket thickness, etc.
What melling pump is it?HV or standard. Most people seem to think a HV is not needed.

I'm sure there is more to ask, but I would let them try to answer this stuff first. IMO it is harder(but less expensive ) to build a short rod stroker correctly than a long rod one. It is pretty easy for a company to just throw a bunch of parts together and call it a "hi performance stroker".

What are they charging for the long block? I would take that and compare it to building a new stroker. In almost all cases you will get a much better motor for the money when you build it yourself. The only legit "good" long blocks that I hear of are Hesco and Golen. Not to say that no one else does a good job but they are what you mostly hear good things about. I was looking at buying a long block to replace my 4.0L and after adding up doing it my self vs. buying a decent long block it was a no brainer for me. I guess the main thing is do you trust yourself to build the motor and do you mind paying the extra money for the warranty? Don’t forget in most cases the warranty does not cover the labor of removing the engine and installing the new one nor do they cover the shipping both ways. So if you get a bum motor you could end up spending ALOT more on it in the long run than you would have building it with quality parts yourself.

I know this is an older thread but I still wanted to give my feedback about Western Engine Supply. DO NOT take your engine to Western Engine Supply. I have had nothing but issues with my 4.6 liter from them. It ran ok at first. Then I noticed knocking from the upper end after 10,000 miles. Cam lobe on #3 was flattened and needed replaced. Western engine would not back their warranty. 2 Cams and 20,000 miles later I now have a horrible lower end knock. Terry from Western Engine was very uncooperative and unresponsive for weeks about any issues after he was paid.
