Just asked the same question a few weeks ago.

With under 500-600 miles on the new engine, i'm still treating mine like i'm breaking it in and have only jumped on it less than a dozen times.
When it comes to how i broke mine in, i took a little bit of everyones input (including outside sources) and blended them together so to speak. I also had a hell of an issue indexing my distributer which threw off my break in plans anyway. So far so good for me though, no blow by, pulls strong, and runs pretty good considering mines a Renix system.
Read what people had to say in my post about it and maybe that will give you an idea. From my recent experience, i can say that there are only a couple trusted ways of breaking an engine amd cam in, which way you choose is really based on your engine and experience.

Re: engine break in
Thanks for the reply! That gives me a few usefull tips for breaking new motor in.I couldnt find that post earlier. I am also using renix motor and had similar issue with my initial startup.Began to backfire around 2k rpm. I then discovered my distributor was off one tooth. After that was fixed. It ran great! btw good job on your build. Motor looks great!
