Not hung, the transmission is flush with the block/aluminum plate.

Re: New 4.6L stroker build
Your Jeep had an aluminum plate between the trans and engine? I don't remember seeing that with automatics, only manual trans.

Re: New 4.6L stroker build
Ok this is a stupid question, and I know you probably looked, but did you make sure there isn't a pilot bushing in the end of the crank?

Re: New 4.6L stroker build
Yes, there is an aluminum on the automatic transmissions too. It covers several large holes in the bell housing that would otherwise be there without it. No pilot bushing. I did compare the stock 4.0L crank with the 4.2L crank and couldn't find any differences in the flex plate mounting flange or end hole that would make any difference.

X2 on the Aluminum plate with a auto trans. The pilot diameters are on a 4.2 is similar to a 4.0 crank. IIRC the 4.2 had a bushing in it to match the AW4 torque converter pin dia. where the 4.0 crank didn't.

Bushing? What bushing? I didn't notice a bushing when I was examining the crank, maybe it is needed?

Re: New 4.6L stroker build
IIRC there is a thin walled bushing in the end of the 4.2 crank. I should get my engine back this week sometime and I will double check and get some pics and demensions for you. I remember something about it because I almost pulled it out when I remove the bearing and remember using my digital calipers on it. The ID is .010-.015 larger than the pilot pin on the torque converter.
I can't imagine that being your noise, being that it makes a difference wheteher the engine is hot or cold when it does it.

Unless it is used to center the converter.

OK, I'm motivated to find the bushing part number now!

Re: New 4.6L stroker build
Are you sure that isn't the pilot bushing for a manual transmission? IIRC the 4.0L and 4.2L crank have the same measurement in that area.

Re: New 4.6L stroker build
If it had needle bearings it was meant for something to rotate in it, such as a manual transmission input shaft pilot.

Re: New 4.6L stroker build
Yes, it had a BA-10 behind it. Thats what made me start mic'ing diameters, I wanted to make sure my auto would go behind it. I thought there was a reason the diameters were so close so I just left the bushing in there.SilverXJ wrote:If it had needle bearings it was meant for something to rotate in it, such as a manual transmission input shaft pilot.
BTW: My 4.2 crank is from a YJ.
