What are My Valve Options?

Post by PolloLoco »

Jeepconnection.com has this:
P5249875 4.0 and 2.5 stainless intake 1.92 dia 17.95
P5249877 4.0 and 2.5 stainless intake 1.97 dia 17.95
P5249880 4.0 and 2.5 stainless exhaust 1.56 dia 15.95

The diameters are different from what is listed in the Cylinder Head FAQ. What is the valve size that I will need? I plan on running a Mopar cam, springs, valves, retainers, and keepers. I will run Yella Terra 1.7 roller rockers. I have heard that SBC valves are cheaper but I don't want to mix brands in my valvetrain so I'm going to stick with Mopar (except for the RR). I am not going to make the valves larger, I don't want to deal with that extra work.

If I ever take my head off, I'll be going with the 1.97ins and the 1.62exs(P5249876) and swapping the .051"hg for the .044". Those swirl-polished tulip valves are purdy. Today I'm dropping the 95 head off at the machinist to check for flatness and pressure check.

I found the post that you were excited about getting those. I don't want to have to machine the head too much to fit different springs, I want something that I know will just fit right in with no additional work.

Does the 0.05" difference take into account the material removed while doing a valve job?

With a higher compression ratio (9.5+ DCR) am I going to want the larger valves to be flowing more air?

The valves that you listed are not under the Jeep Valves. What work is needed to get them to work in the Jeep head?

The seats will obviously need some work for the larger valves. Unshroud the intake valve by scribing the 4" hole from the HG and that'll show you how much material you can remove. As for those 1.625" exhaust valves, they are 8mm like the others and use the same keepers and locks, but I am unsure if the additional .020" in length will complicate rocker & pushrod installation. I've read about the 1.97"&1.625" combo before but didn't notice any complications. I have read where there isn't any advantage of using the 2.02s due to the shrouding issues and the intake runners not being able to take advantage of that large of a valve. You got a great deal on those take outs and kudos to getting the setup to work. Not that I'm a purist, but for some reason I wouldn't want to use chevy parts in a mopar. Besides, those tulip valves are sexy.
edit: I guess all of the exhaust valves are 4.93":

I haven't actually cut my head for them yet but I see no problems, the chivvy valves will work with the Jeep retainers and keepers so I may very well run Jeep springs?, cutting the seats is gravy, and you can grind the stems down to get the installed height or leave the seats tall, or shim the pedestals, since everyone here is OBSESSED! with getting custom length push rods! I really see no issues? but then again I do own all of my own valve grinding equipment so everything but getting the head cut for guides and/or seats is FREE! :rockout:
