picked up a 4.0 out of what I was told was an XJ. Block # 53010341
I can't find anything definitive about this casting number. Can anyone shed some light on it for me?

That's what I determined also, I just didn't see it listed in the Block FAQ. So, I was thinking I had done something wrong

Picked up the same block 2 days ago startin' on my stroker adventure. Googled the heck out of that cast number and couldn't really find anything helpful...I did pull it out of a '97 cherokee. Been breaking it down over the past day and doing comparisons. Motor mounts look the same as mine ('92 yj), most of the bolt pattern looks the same as well. The serpentine belt routing is different, but I don't see any problems using '92 hardware on the newer engine (alt mount, ac mount, pwr steering). Hope that helps and good luck!

I tore it down last night. Should be out of the oven by now!
Looks like everything I have will bolt up. Engine mount brackets actually fit, unlike the 99WJ block I had.

I went back to the computer at work. They have PRO-SIS on the balancer and the machinist said I could have free reign on it!
So here is what I was able to glean from it.

Cylinder Block Component Combinations On
1987-95 Chrysler/Jeep 4.0L Engines
The AERA Technical Committee offers the following information on cylinder block component combinations for 1987-95 Chrysler/Jeep 4.0L engines. This engine has used two block, heads and crankshaft combinations since 1987. Intermixing of those components may not be possible, depending upon the transmission used. Two similar connecting rods and only one camshaft has been used.
Complete block assemblies should be made up into three different groups:
1) 1987-90 - original head, block and crankshaft.
2) 1991 - redesigned head, block and original crankshaft.
3) 1992-95 - redesigned head, block and crankshaft.
The cylinder block casting numbers 2665 and 5535 are used in engines built from 1987-90. The block casting number 8405 is for 1991-95 engines and has two additional mounting bracket bolt holes. The 8405 block casting also has the main bearing tang receiver groove located in the center area of the housing bore. Previous blocks had that groove located at the ends of the housing bore. Consequently, main bearing sets were also modified for 1991 and later blocks.
The original crankshaft casting number 3003453 is used for 1987-91 engines and it has a rear pilot hole drilled approximately .550" or .850" deep. If that crankshaft is used in a standard transmission application, it requires pilot bearing Part #33004041. Beginning in 1992, crankshaft casting number 53020767 was produced with a rear pilot hole depth of approximately .850". That crankshaft, when used in a standard transmission application requires a sleeve & bearing assembly Part #53009180. The pilot bearing is also available
individually with Part #53009181.
The original cylinder head casting number 2686 is used for 1987-90 engines. Head casting numbers 7119 and 7220 are used for engines built for 1991-95 applications. The connecting rod casting numbers are 351 & 554, they're interchangeable as long as total weights are similar. This engine has used only one camshaft casting number, 89330-02983.

Their has been interist in using the later model engines ( Blocks) in older vehicles. Can you find out what the differences are on the 98-06 blocks? I know on some of the engines, the water pump bolt pattern changed, so the older accessory drives will not work. I think the motor mount mounting holes move location as well. Any info you could pass along ( like which block went in which vehicle XJ,WJ, YJ etc) would be helpfull to the rest of us.Bodo wrote:I went back to the computer at work. I have a 99WJ block at the shop right now. I'll take some side by side images and get some measurements. There is another post that I made that shows the difference in motor mount brackets between the two.

I thought that 96-98 XJ/TJ blocks were interchangeable. Now this thread makes me think that earlier XJ blocks will fit a 97-98 TJ, correct?
Would it be still be a good idea to use a 94-95 XJ block for a stroker? The FAQ states that in 96 more ribbing was added to increase strength.

The painted block is the WJ block and the XJ block is unpainted.
