Bent Camshaft

I had my block at the machine shop to fix an oops with the cam bearings. I got the call from the shop that it was all set to pick up. When I got there the tech told me that the bearings were all fixed but that I had other problems. He said that my cam was bent, .0025-.003 out of round and that it had a tight spot in it as it rotated. He talked to someone that he deals with that grinds cams and he said to put the cam in with moly lube and turn it by hand until the tight spot loosens up. Said that he has done it before. My problem with that is that would take up all my oil clearance in the bearings. I am going to call Comp Cams and see what they say today. Anyone else ever hear of this or have this happen to them? First for me...

On a side note, I had the cam nitride treated, I think that the nitriding might be what caused the warpage and Comp is going to second that. Hopefully they can help me out some.

I'm sure turning the cam until it loosen up will work.............but i don't like the idea at all

My first cam change was in a 150,000 mile 318 and the cam bearings were shot.

Didn't want to pull the motor to have then change so i just thru in the new cam, as is.........drove it for a couple year before i build my first 340............so it will probably live, But .............

Hopefully they can straighten it

The pressure from the valvesprings may very well do all the straightening you need... there is quite a bit of force from that, and all the loading puts quite a bit of force on each cam journal...

Called Comp today. He said they won't let a cam go out the door if it is over .001 out of round and that they check it after nitriding so that wouldn't have done it. He said it could have happened in shipping and even though they didn't have to, that they wouldn't charge me to straighten it back out. Props to Comp on that. Good customer service is hard to find these days. I'm glad I bought my cam from them and every time I call they are extremely helpful. The only thing that sucks is having to wait a couple more weeks to put it back together.

Did you box have any kind of shipping damage when you got it?? Seems crazy that something like that could happen during shipping without a seriously messed up box.

Anybody ever see how a camshaft or crankshaft gets straightened?

For those that don't know the answer is a big hammer and a concave chisel. Crude but very effective.

And you hit it on the concave side too! not the high side.

When I got the package there was a bottle of cam break in lube in the box that was completely smashed. The cam box had no damage to it at all. It still could have been dropped on one end or something

There are machines that will straighten crankshafts that use a press with an impact hammer built in to straighten them. Anybody who straightens a lot of cams or cranks most likely has one.

Comp Cams has stood behind their products for many years and has replaced parts that were shipped out of spec for free.
