Lunati

Post by cavaliers1323 »

Is anyone runnng a lunati cam? They have some pretty aggresive grinds, I was looking at their most aggresive one the 63503. Is this too aggresive for a N/A motor? I'm in the proscess of converting my 383 to pane, and have been tossing around the idea of running my 4.6l on it. Seeing that propane is equivilent to 100-110 octane, you could run a higher compression ratio and advance timing for some low end. I have a crane cam now, but im not sure of it's a good match for what I have planned????

Hey,
I have the 901 in my 4.7 and I like it just fine. It's just slightly lumpy. I need a new rear end as a result :o I am also just about to do a bit more A/F tuning and I'm lookin at water-meth. injection in addition. Check out Alcohol Injection Systems and Snow Performance. It look pretty interesting.

Hey,
I have a HEAVILY port&polished big valve head, Yella Terra RR's, 58cc comb. chambers, chromo pushrods, 5.2 V-8 valve springs,. I makes "noise" under throttle. Normal mechanical stuff. TOTALLY quiet at idle or cruise.

Hey Silver,
Been too busy to get on here lately. Just valve train noise. Only under acceleration. I have had the engine builder ride in it and he said it sounds pretty normal. The Lunati cam has a pretty sharp profile, so I'm guessing it's the valves opening and closing quickly, resulting in them "snapping" shut. I still need to have the A/F tuned also. I've wondered if that could create any added noise.

Unless its running lean and pinging I doubt the tune is creating any extra noise.

I added water injection to my N/A Mustang GT in an attempt to get around running premium fuel with the Diablosport tuner. It is OK but only works well if I ride around at WOT! Since I can't do that, I just run premium. You don't notice a difference in horses without the power adder. Now, my Stang is not as modified as your stroker so who knows. I would think at best you would see very minimal gains. The only side effect that I had was that I had to replace the sensor (crap, forgot the name of it) that makes the RPMs hang on a Stang. I figured that the methanol corroded it. I quit running the methanol and went pure water and had no more issues. The alcohol is corrosive so you will run that risk. BUT, the stuff you hear about water injection in WWII and Korea airplanes is true. I've got an old buddy that flew during Korea and has photos of his bomber taking off from a short airstrip pouring black smoke. I asked what was wrong and he said, "nothing, I was hammering it with water injection and it was getting up!" Said it ran like hell on water!

Hey Peeps,
My thought on the water injection is that it could take care of the issue of pingin'. My compression may be around 9.8:1 if I figured my cam info correctly. With the iron head, it is pingin' under 1/2-3/4 throttle, even on premium. The newer, more precise water injection systems along with a bit of chip A/F tuning should straighten things out, I'm hoping.

Hey Todd, what rpms is yours pinging at? Mine has a light ping b/t 2.5K-3K(right near peak torque) during a similar 1/2-3/4 throttle with 93(10:1scr, 8.57dcr). It sucks that it is in a closed loop area that can't be tweaked by a piggyback(unless you have the option to back the timing off a bit).

I have a bit of sound around 2-3k RPM. Valves or the rockers. I know that roller rockers should be noisy, I also have a tube header, and maybe the cam is noisy. I have gone through everything and never found anything that throws a red flag. Its not very loud... I even crack a window and it can't even be heard. If it is supposed to be there, I'll take it.

Hey guys,
Mine seems to be pingin' around 2500-3000 rpms when I'm at more than about 1/3rd throttle. Interestingly, it seems to have come up in combination with being stuttery above about 4000. Aside from having accumulated miles, I changed to the colder rc9 plugs. I'm at about .045 gap. To much gap causing the 4000+ stutter? Perhaps. I'm gonna' try going back to the hotter stock plugs, a little less gap, and the Unichip as soon as I have the 9" rear in. That should be in the next couple weeks. I will likely add the water injection when I can decide on the right one. It's pretty well proven technology when dialed in and it seems it would be beneficial with some of the heat related issues on our strokers.
