Oil slinger
I installed the oil slinger on the 258 12 wt crank with the JP timing chain. The oil slinger doesn't go on the key on the crank gear. The key way doesn't come out from under the crank gear(If this makes sense) so there is no key for the oil slinger to sit on. I know when I torque the balancer on it should hold the slinger tight so it won't turn. Just curious if anyone else has noticed this? If I can remember correctly, on engines I have rebuilt the oul slinger sits on the key...or am I just screwd up?

Re: Oil slinger
I think that notch in the oil sling is just so you can slide it over the key in crank for the balancer. When installed it doesn't actually line up with a key. The harmonic balancer is what holds it in.

10-4 on Silvers response. Thats exactlly how mine worked out after i fixed my machine shops boo boo. They didnt install the slinger, and then installed my crankshaft spacer between my timing set and balancer.
Kinda caught me by surprise considering these are the people who machined and assembled the long block.

Oil slinger
About the oil slinger. After tearing my motor down and looking through all my new and old parts there is no oil slinger anywhere to be found! I noticed 1 red painted head bolt. Could maybe someone have rebuilt orrepaired something and not put the oil slinger back on? I bought my 2000 WJ with about 83,000 on it.

Re: Oil slinger
Very likely especially if there was a paint mark on one of the head bolts. Thats a sure sign they have already been re-used once.
If it feels right, then STROKE it!

Re: Oil slinger
Hi, I was just about to post the same question when I found yours. On my 12cw with the cloyes double roller crank gear...the keyway does not come through the gear so there is no "positive" stop on the slinger . I would assume that since it is so light that the friction between the balancer and the gear hold it in place during rotation

Re: Oil slinger
On the issue of the slinger being present in some engines but not in others (for whatever reason), is there a negative effect due to the slinger not being there?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Oil slinger
The supposed reason they eliminated it is because the oil seal design changed so they didn't need the slinger. However, I have seen no indication that the seal design actually changed. There is also suppose to be a harmonic balancer that is .040" longer to go with the elimination of the slinger. However, once again I haven't seen a listing for one.
I also don't know when they changed it as my 2000 came with one.

Re: Oil slinger
From what I found its only the OEM balancers you need to watch out for.

Re: Oil slinger
My 2001 did not come with a slinger which had me jumping when I was putting my stroker back together.

Re: Oil slinger
The only factory harmonic balancers you can get are the "new style " which are a hair thicker to account for having no slinger. Even if you order one for a model year with a slinger, you get the new one. I just ground down the back of mine a little because I left my slinger in. If I remember, the slinger was only 1/32 inch thick anyway so i doubt it would unbalance the belt even if you did not grind some away

Re: Oil slinger
I'd chuck it up in the lathe and face it off rather than take a grinder to it, it needs to be square to keep from twisting the crank snout sideways.
