Timing Chain Guide
I'm using the 258 timing set that came with the cam and lifter set I bought. My question is this, did the '87-'90 258 use a timing chain guide like the 4.0 does. There wasn't one on the 258's timing cover when I removed it, and online parts store doesn't list it, so common sense tells me it doesn't. Common sense has gotten me in trouble before, so I thought I should make sure. Thanks.

Re: Timing Chain Guide
Does it even have the slots to put it in the cover?

If memory serves me correctly, yes, cover looks the same, just no plastic block. I'll make sure tonight, boy that would be funny if I had the answer laying in a box on the garage floor.

OK, I can't find the 258 cover to save my life. Checked the FSM, no mention of the guide for either the 4.2 or 4.0.

I don't know much about engines per-se, but i don't see why it wouldn't be there since its on the 4.0L. Doesn't it help keep the chain tight?oletshot wrote:OK, I can't find the 258 cover to save my life. Checked the FSM, no mention of the guide for either the 4.2 or 4.0.
If it were me and the cover had the provisions for the guide id put it on there no matter what it came like from factory using the logic from my previous sentence.

That's what I was thinking, I don't think its going to hurt anything being in there even if its not necessary.
