wow, there goes the sub $500 build cost if much machine work is needed. almost makes me feel just replacing the crank and bolting everything back up. i know theoretically this is a horrible idea but has anyone actually tried it? sure would be dirt cheap. cranks are 29.99 at my local JY.

I guess it depends what you want to end up with when you are done. Just replacing the crank and bearings should work, You should at least measure the crank to see what size bearings to use. Maybe grind the crank. But if you start with an engine with 100,000 miles on it you are going to end up with an engine with 100,000 miles on it. If you go through everytning you should end up with an engine that will be like new.

I've swapmeeted/Fleabayed/Craigslisted been given enough parts that I could have one running by the end of the week for what ever it cost to get my Renix block bored!, but I'm going to build one the right way, it can be done cheaply! the only money I plan spending on machine shop work is boring, block decking and grinding the crank. I own my own cam bearing installer and valve grinding equipment and have all the specialty assembly tools!

I'm voted for 1500-2000, but that's cheating and wishful thinking, since I didn't like the way the first one came out, and had lots of fun, so I did it again.
About 900 for machining, 550 for the pistons, 100 for the crank, 300 for cam, gaskets, and etc. Plus an oil pump and timing chain, so that puts it above 2000 already, and I know I don't remember some stuff. Oh yeah- Fuel injectors, valve springs, bearings, 2 broken bolts, rod bolts, the upcoming fuel/air meter (waiting for the LM-2 iPod touch version).
That's not counting the first cam, the first set of pistons, rods, gaskets, etc.
Okay, it's definitely maybe possibly under 3000, but maybe not.
But it's still worth every penny.
P.S.- I actually had to buy 2 throw-out bearings cause I laid the first one down in the shop and was never able to find it again.

Spent $1800 on the machine work and parts for the longblock. Built it myself so saved significantly there. I did the port/polish job and port-matched the intake also. If you toss in the cost of injectors and ignition parts, you can add about $500 to that. So roughly, $2300ish. Hard to tell since I replaced all but two parts on the whole Jeep

If I had money I'd drop a lot into my lil 4L lol

I plan to spend $1,500 to $3,000 I looked at the Titans 4.6 for $2,4990 and Golan for $3,4990

I just got 1000 mi. on mine and love it. I have $925 into it plus oil filter and coolant. They bored it 30 over did the valves and cam, With new timing chain and gears plus includes a 4.2 crank and rods they had for 200. Only had to go to mid grade to git rid of the ping.

whats costing you guys so much at the machine shop? What exactly are you having them do?

Hot Tank- $45

Bore .060- $90 for all six

Install cam bearings- $20

Deck Block- $85

Setup rings on KB pistons- $45

Guy at the maching shop said he has never had an issure with KB pistons but the rings have to be setup right or you will have issues...so for $45 Ill just let them do it.

Ill be assembling the motor myself....

Well, up to this point, I picked up my block I am going to stroker, a crank with some misc. parts that are un-needed, pistons, gasket kit, valve springs, retainers, locks, timing set, lifters, and cam for $1,128.79. My total BEFORE getting ANYTHING machined is $1553.79. I think I'll probably go with bigger valves (which will be an additional $200) and not sure if custom push rods will be needed. I'm sure I'll be looking somewhere around the $3-3500 mark. I should be able to recoup some of that cost from the unused parts that I got with the crank and my 4.0L that is in my Jeep now. Going to do a Transmission refresh while I've got it out as well. I HOPE I don't hit $4k, but the way it looks and "since I'm there, I might as well do it right," I think I may! OUCH.

But HEY! Just think of the Rooster tail this thing will be able to throw when I'm done!

The block was not decked the head was cut .010,new stock valves,perf grind, stock valve springs
Stock exaust,throttle body for now.ran out of money,i need a wideband next and then ill search for some of the power im missing with exaust,bigger t-body and some tuning (98 tj obd2)

Subscribing. I will be watching this thread. I am looking to stroke a 4.0. I built several different type of engines in my life but not one of these. I have been reading this forum on links for three hours now.

Welcome. You'll have no problem building a stroker if you've already built a few engines. Keep on researching and let it soak in.

Jeees, just passed $5,500 so much for my $2500 budget!

I obviously got free machine work but it wasn't cheap for the engine parts and associated install parts. $450 at HESCO alone for a water pump, TPS adapter, distributor gear, and crank bolt spacer. I traded some rocker arms for the KB pistons so that helped to the tune of $500. Still I gotta think I'm in this at least a couple thousand bucks and when coupled with the long arm kit, trans, and transfer case I know I could have bought a newer something or other that would be nowhere near as fun as the Jeep.......

Oh yeah, and i leveraged the house for 6 "fuel line repair kits" at $12 a piece cause I didn't order em online like I knew I should!
