ROLLER CAM ENGINE RUNNING

Post by jptrking »

FIRST POST HERE. THIRD CAM IN STROKER, GOT A PROTOTYPE HYDRAULIC ROLLER JUST GOT FIRED UP TODAY AND OIL PRESSURE IS DOWN AROUND 10 LBS. AGAIN.OIL PRESSURE WAS FINE BEFORE OTHER CAM WENT OUT. WAS WONDERING ABOUT THE CAM RETENTION SPRING, WONDER IF I NEED A STRONGER ONE FOR THE ROLLER. ON ANOTHER NOTE HAVE BEEN RREADING FOR A WHILE, BUT NOT MUCH OF A COMPUTER GUY, NOW THAT I AM FINALLY SIGNED UP WILL PROB HAVE A LOT OF QUESTIONS. RUNNING A STROKER WITH TURBO AND PSC1 PIGGYBACK CONTROLLER, SNOW PERFORMANCE WATER METHANE INJECTION, 904 TRANS WITH TRANSBRAKE.

I'd be very surprised if it is the retention spring as all it does is keep the cam from wandering back and forth and making a knocking sound.
I assume you are referring to the retention spring in the bolt on the cam timing gear?

Where did you get the roller cam and did you compare the lifters to make sure they do not uncover the oil gallery that feeds them and dump oil directly back tot he pan?

Were the cam journals compared to the stockers?

Lifter diameter?

Is it "noisy" making you suspect other issues?

Also, note: All caps is considered a form of shouting online and is considered rude by many, It also makes posts hard to read when it is all in one large block of text.

Got more information...Who made cam? lifter? Is it going to be a production or one off? Cost to have it done? Any pictures?

sorry wrambler, didnt mean to be rude. the prototype was made off of a stock blank then supposedly hardened to close to billet hardeness. i know this may be a no no but like i said this sis a prototype, so we will see what happens. the reason i asked about the cam retention spring, is when te first cam went out the engine never really had good oil pressure, and when we replaced the cam the bearings were trashed, all this after about 2000 miles maybe. i think the builder would prob rather me wait to see how the cam does before we tell who built it. thanks for the reply and note about caps, like isaid not much of acomputer guy, but there sure is alot of good info on here. wish i would have read more before i started this project 3 years ago!!!!!!!

There was some talk on here about deleting the spring a pin and just running a longer pin. That way the cam can't walk.

I am going to assume you or the maker checked and compared the lifter height to make sure they do not expose the oil feed to the lifters?
They are the correct diameter?

If the bearings are good and it is on a stock blank then that "should" eliminate the journals dumping the oil.

I was not aware of the idea of replacing the spring with a longer pin to prevent cam movement. I would still think you would hear something if it wandering around that far?

Sure would like to see this done and working. I've been wanting to see this done for a while now.

wrambler, i am working with the engine builder and he got this all setup for meand i have been waiting for about four months, so i would like to think he had checked all of this out. by he way my brother just brought the jeep back says it runs good. the mechanic hooked up a manual guauge and got 18-20 lbs at idle so i assume that is ok. also very excited jeep has been down since fall.

18-20 psi at idle is fine.

Keep us up to date on how it does and let us know when we can get one!

i guess the cats out of the bag. our cam came from 505 performance, if you have any technical questions you can ask him. just got back from lunch in the jeep and seemed to run strong.

We'd actualy rather have real world results and user notes.

The Owners/Moderators here have asked for details and as near as I can tell we are not getting any... :brickwall:
