ARe there any performance roller cam options for the 4.0 or am I limited to flat tappet?

That is just down right mean.. making a statement like that then not telling us more!! With my luck it will come out a week after I get my engine in my XJ.

That's how I felt about the KBs, Chris, except they came out a day or two before I built mine(luckily I had both sets of rods so I could go either way). At least there's not a person from a company claiming they'll be out at a certain time, or giving you the run around. The last I heard on the cam was $800 from the now done for Crane.

I'd be interested in knowing anything more about this.

This was massively researched right up to getting the blanks made when the needed 5 buyers could not be found and the project halted.
I haven't been around here much, but Nick Alfano an AMC guy is working on getting AMC V8 roller cams made now that Crane has gone belly up.
I was wondering if there is any interest or progress being made on the six cylinder roller cam, or if we could perhaps talk Nick into looking into it at the same time as doing the V8 cam.

I am this close >< to building my lowbuck 4.5L and the thought is crossing my mind that my existing 4.0L would make a perfecto test mule for a 4.0L roller cam.

I probably won't be ready to do anything till mid summer as I have what I hope is one more round of medical stuff to go through first

I have a shop looking at the blanks right now. He is guessing $500-$600 each for blanks. It could be cheaper if your cam grinder could work with round lobes and not need to have the lobes roughed in. It would also be less if you did not need the gear. ( external oil pump).

He wanted to make at least 5, i will buy 2, so if three other people are interisted we could move foward.

Flash and Delk were the major players in getting blanks sent to Joe at Roto-faze.
I will likely be leaving people out etc,
Basically I will try and go through the Strokersgroup emails and see if I can sort out who did what and if we need to start over.
Joes blanks look to have better pricing.
Crane is gone
Unless Nick Alfano can get lifters back online for the AMC retrofit that option has dissapeared.
I see there is a pole in place on these cams too.

I don't want to clutter up that forward so I'll add my thoughts here.
Who here remembers the project from the strokers group and has more info?

Is any of that info still good do we think?

To me, there is one or two things that have me waffling on going for it.
Biggest one is lifters.
With Crane gone, is there going to be an option? even if we can get them online again will they fit in all the positions of the six?
What good is a blank if the lifters don't fit?

I for one don't want a solid lifter and don't want a block machining chore involved with this.
I want a bolt in setup. as in a true retrofit.
Idealy this will be very marketable if done correctly. There are a ton of AMC sixes out there.

I don't want to reinvent the wheel on this if the work is being done and something is on the horizon.
Last time I had issues that stopped me from getting involved. I still have a procedure coming up that will sideline me for half the summer if it works.
But that will probably leave me able to do things again! Instead of being in pain all the time. I have a trial of the treatment that starts on the 11th. I should know if it will work by 18th and be sure of what is going on fully by the end of the month.
If we can work out a full plan to get the blanks back on track I should be able to actually buy one.

My plan would be to buy the blank, have it machined and work out the specifics of the install. Then put it into the 4.0L in my American for a breakin thrash, test and tune etc, If all goes well and nothing breaks I would tranfer it to a 4.5L later. If it breaks the motor, I have a 4.5L waiting in the wings for the American.

The 500-600 price was a guess, if the going price is $485.00 then that will be the price. This is for a 8620 billet cam blank, correct? My guy can turn them around in 2-3 weeks.

I am working with Isky on a solid roller solution, the hydrauic roller you are probably stuck with using the AMC V8 stuff. It roller cam is not cheap, even for a production one.

Crowler makes a hydraulic roller lifter with a tiebar, maybe they will make a custom, or a standard size will fit.

I wasn't trying to talk down pricing or anything at this point. I just got reinterested when Nick Alfano started talking about keeping the roller cam available for the AMC V8 and someone else over at the amc-list pointed out the loss of the retrofit lifter we had talked about using in the six.

Is the blank you are looking at going to be distributor friendly and such? I can't recall all the details that required. It's been while since we went through all this on the group.

Like I said I have a few weeks to lock down details on how my life will go. Then I can fully committ to at least being in for a blank!

I do not need a distributor gear or fuel pump cam for my application, but I thought it would be a good idea to have the gear on it. I was also playing around with the front of the cam. The first ones will probably have the standard cam design that was used prior to 1999, I may make some that will take a Ford 351C cam gear. Turns out that the cam to crank spacing is the same, and you can get a Cloyes Hex adjust setup for the 351C. the crank gear and chain would be the same as the Jeep double roller from Cloyes.

Solid Lifters:

Talked to Isky today, they recommended part # 3372RH for the lifter. they sell the tie bars separately. They said the ford 429 tiebar would work, but .070 of material would have to be removed from the root of the forks, or .035 per side. The dimension of the bar is 1.750 and the AMC would require 1.680. I don't know if you could use the Isky bars with Comp Cam hydraulic roller lifters.

The lifter is 1.605" tall. (info for pushrod length)

I hit the numbers on those lifters and I understand you have to pay to play, but those are pretty darned expensive!
I've had zero luck in getting an idea on what those lifters even fit! Iskys website leaves a lot to be desired
