John, so you have eliminated the spring before? if so what do you use?
Drill rod, cut to length required and replaces the spring behind the pin in the camshaft.

How do you determine the correct length though?

measure the timing set cover distance from mounting surface to pin boss=dimension a
measure thickness of timing set cover gasket = dimension b
Insure camshaft is to the rear of the block fully, measure length the end of camshaft sets above timing cover mounting surface on the block = dimension c

(A+B)-c will give you the length between the camshaft face and the boss inside the timing set cover. remove the pin and spring from the cam end, clean out really well, measure the depth.
Get a section of drill rod that will fit snugly inside the pin that the spring fit in and adjust the length to fill the depth of the cam opening and the dimension determined earlier. You may need to allow for gasket compression depending on what you use.

When I wrote this last night, it made perfect sense. in the light of day.... I do this measurement with the timing set installed and bolted down, so you are really measuring from the face of the camshaft bolt that the spring loaded pin sits in,not the direct camshaft face, sorry about that omission.

John we ended up doing away with the spring and using the drill rod and it seem to work very well.

In the bolt that holds the camshaft to its sprocket there is a pin sticking out of a hole in the bolt. Behind this pin is a spring.

I see, my 88 renix was not set up that way. Reasearching a little more and it seem that setup was 90 on i believe. Would it be worth while to convert to that setup with the spring?

Seems strange that they would change it on a 90 which is still a RENIX.

FWIW, my 90 has it.
If it feels right, then STROKE it!
