My first was a 4.6 SCAT RA with 9.6:1. For my 2001 XJ I'm considering a 10.7:1 but wonder if I can use pump gas. Not doing the aluminum head and might go .020 over rather than .030 over. I plan on using a reworked 0630 head from a '98 XJ...



What do you think? ANY OPINIONS are helpful.

You could build a 10.7:1 compression stroker if you have E85 in your area. Otherwise you'd need to run an aggressive cam to keep the DCR down to run pump gas.

Thanks. I'm starting to lean towards 9.6:1. I need to pick a cam. I used comp cams before but I need to do more research. What's the best cam company?

I don't know the answer to that one but I do know that CompCams has the widest choice of cams for the AMC I6.

Hi StrokerGal,

It would be wise in my opinion to keep your static compression ratio in the mid 9’s with an iron head.

I offer a Piston with a dish volume ranging from 12cc to 28cc in 2cc increments making it much easier to hit that target number.

Russ, I'd love to know more about your pistons. I was planning on going .020 over. I'm only familiar with SCAT from my other build. They offered Icon forged pistons. No complaints, but always looking to learn more...

I would love to hear some Cam options other than CompCams. They have two options for Jeep strokers that I know of. I think my other XJ has a custom grind but I don't think it's an option anymore.

2001 XJ Classic. 10.5:1 Stroker-
My New Edelbrock head calls for '91-'98 header and most are listed as '91-'99, and the existing exhaust manifold has two plugged sensor holes. No pre-cats on this vehicle. My Brother's 2001 has pre-cats. I just wonder if someone deleted the Pre-cats. Did some 2001's come without pre-cats? It passed Ca emissions before the motor blew. In Utah now, but want to have options in case I move.

In case it matters, the blown block is NOT AA NVH block. New block is.

Our other 2001, (Stroked 9.7:1 ), with pre cats. Not sure how two 2001's can have different setups. What happened to the two sensors? Do I need another pcm? Can I delete the pre cats on the other jeep? Trying to stay on top of this stuff. Not easy!

Early '99 models that were manufactured in 1998 still had the 0630 head castings that came on '96-'98 models. The exhaust ports on these cylinder heads were identical to those on the 7120 castings from 91-95 models. That's why some aftermarket headers are listed as fitting '91-'99 models. Obviously those headers aren't suitable on engines with 0331 head castings.

Yeah, someone definitely deleted the pre-cats and replaced them with straight pipe. You can see the joints where they were welded in.

Thanks. It's so bizarre. This XJ passed Ca emissions too. What happens to the censors in this situation? They seem to be deleted. Does the stock PCM allow this? The lines are not welds btw. The pipe is expanded or swaged according to my Dad. Always something...
