Jeep FirePower Ignition Kit

Post by jeeppoor »

Have 4.6 Stoker, 63mm throttle body and bigger injectors.
Stock injection system.
Is it worth it to get fire power ignition kit?
Will I see a difference?

You'll see the same difference as you would if you replaced the same components with new OEM versions.

What about where it says you can open up the gap on the spark plug to get a more complete and better burn?
Don't know that is why I am asking?

Years ago in our mud truck (Big block) we used to run msd ignition and gap the plugs a little more.

Been there done that over the years with platinum plugs and aftermarket plug wires, and they turned out to be no better than the stock Champion plugs and OEM wires.

The "claim-to-fame" of high-voltage performance coils is to allow a larger spark plug gap. It seems that you hear a lot of reports that they "burn out" the coils fairly regularly. Normal spark plug gaps are ~.035" or so. These coils allow .045 to .055". I think that these wide-gap specs are what burn the coils out. Electricity follows the path of least resistance, so if you've made it more difficult to initiate a spark across the gap that energy is going to go somewhere which usually will be an internal short in the coil (or somewhere). If I was to run one, I would establish the new, wider gap on the low end of the specification for longevity's sake. Wide gaps do seem to produce slightly more power, but the difference is nearly the difference in back-to-back dyno pulls. For a race rig it might be worth it, but for a deep trail rig probably not so much so.

Oh yeah, what Ceromaniac said! For most, a solid OEM system is perfectly fine. But if you want to do it JUST BECAUSE, that's cool too! :rockout:
