NEW stroker project for 98 TJ

Post by TJBUD »

Started my stroker project 1 month ago for my 1998 TJ. Questions below a brief plan summary:

1998 #569 4.0 block, previously bored .040, at my machine shop now. Expect .060 overbore (4.7L)
0630 head is cracked between #3 &4 combustion chambers on deck surface—considering replacements
New stroker crank-3.895
4.0 6.123 rods-considering reuse mine vs new
Considering Hyperutectic and Forged pistons (21-27 cc dish)
Target 9.25-9.3 static, 8.0-8.1 dynamic cr. Using Jeep Stroker Calculator—cool!
Considering camshafts (maybe 68-232-04 but prefer Nitrided).
99+ intake in transit-I will modify for my vacuum and manifold temp sensor
63mm bored Throttle Body by Jeff Leigh—pre-teardown installed and tested
CRT Performance power boost cap, rotor, wires and coil—pre-teardown installed and tested
Factory EFI and computer.
Larger , 4 hole injectors, perhaps Bosch 0280155703, 715 or custom by Fuel Injection Connection
Working with my machine shop and help from Russ Pottenger on reciprocating assembly, deck and cylinder head design.
Questions on other engine parts for this stroker:
1) to use my factory EFI and ECM, should I use a 4.0 flywheel and crank position sensor?
2) Can I use a 4.0 harmonic balancer?
3) I’m building a big shopping cart on rock auto for other replacement pieces normally used in rebuild-Melling std volume oil pump, timing set, cam bolt plunger &spring, gaskets, GMB high perf water pump, LUK HD clutch kit, etc.
Any input on these parts?
4) any input on above overall plan?

My last engine rebuilds were in the 70’s and 80’s. I’ve done Cam swaps, heads, carbs, manifolds, headers, etc over the years. I’m always wrenching on something. I’m enjoying this project Jeep.
Thanks for help,
TJBUD

Additional: Ax15 rebuild complete by local shop, I’m in middle of the 231J rebuild.
Jeep has 207K mi, 33x12.50 tires, 3.73 gears, 2-3” lift.

23-24 #/HR injectors are significantly insufficient for a Jeep Stroker. Your 9.3:1 engine will have 350 crank HP potential and 24# injectors are only good for 240 HP @ 90% duty cycle and the typical 40 psi at the rail on 97'-02' Jeeps. Pretty significant bottleneck. You need 35#/HR injectors along with a 255 LPH fuel pump. The stock regulator can handle 255 LPH pumps no problem. 24#/HR injectors are good for a stock 4.0L.

"1) to use my factory EFI and ECM, should I use a 4.0 flywheel and crank position sensor?"
"2) Can I use a 4.0 harmonic balancer?"

Why not? What else did you have in mind?

"GMB high perf water pump"

High performance water pump? That exists? Maybe if you put a smaller pulley on it or a larger pulley on the crankshaft. Or you could rig up a remote mounted electric water pump. Any stock style, non-China water pump is fine. Definitely don't get a FlowKooler. They simply put an Ebay impeller onto a China pump. They weep in less than 12 months.

Overall your plan sounds good. I'd expect your stroker to make around 255 crank HP so I think the right choice of injectors would be the Bosch 0280155849 24.5lb/hr @ 43.5psi (same as Ford XF1E-A5B).
The answers to questions 1&2 is yes, and for question 3 Rockauto is an excellent parts source with a very good customer service. Essentially other engine parts will be stock replacements.

Cheromaniac, thanks for info. I think 0280155849 is a newer connector than the EV1 in my 98 tj. No big deal but what about Bosch 028050947 which is EV1 4-hole 24 lb/hr at 43.5 psi? Just learning about injectors, so let me know if 849 with connector adapter would be better for some reason. I also see FICjeep27stroker set from FIC. Thanks again

The Bosch 947 24lbers would be fine for your mild 4.7 stroker.

Stroker Forum, updates as engine is installed and running well, pulling hard w/out pinging but feels like there’s more to be had with a tune. So far I am thrilled.

A tune will definitely help your new engine reach its full potential.
With the upgrades that you've made to the original spec, your stroker should put out close to 270hp & 330lbft at the crank.
